There are not a lot of freshmen who can get the call up to the varsity level and deliver, but that is what Rashawn Carr did for Leuzinger in 2019. Putting on a show at quarterback, Carr (5-11, 175) started five games airing it out in the Spread while showing great speed and quickness when his dual-threat abilities were needed. When the 2020 California season begins, Carr is adding more responsibilities to his game with the Olympians. The coaches are giving him time to shine at receiver and on defense as a free safety and corner.
Whatever Carr does on the field for his Lawndale squad, college coaches will be reacting. Offer have already been dropped by Arizona and Nevada with his high school coaches fielding recruiting interest.
To talk about it all, Carr sat down for an RNG interview.
Interview
Rashawn, during your freshman season you were put in a unique situation with the coaches at Leuzinger relying on you to contribute. How have the early reps against Ocean League competition helped you expand upon your game this offseason?
This offseason I was working on my technique and coverages, and it all helped. It helped knowing what to expect next season.
How many starts did you get in 2019?
I started five games.
Nice. What style of offense were you running with the Olympians in 2019?
A lot of the Spread offense and with an empty set at times.
When the 2020 season gets going, where all will you be lining up?
My coach has me playing receiver, quarterback, and defensive back. I am trying some new positions on the field this season.
Which positions on defense might you play?
Free safety and corner.
What have you been working on with your fundamentals on offense?
Footwork, my technique and with throwing the ball, my release point.
And on defense?
My footwork and my backpedal. I am seeing the offense in a different way playing on defense. I have been working on getting stronger and faster during the offseason
College teams are anticipating your 2020 season. How many offers do you have already?
Two; Arizona and Nevada.
Which program was the first to offer?
Nevada.
That you know of, which programs are showing interest?
Our new coaching staff is getting interest coming in with coaches asking about my ability and potential.
Receiving that first offer from Nevada, what was that like for you?
It was really exciting.
How do you want college coaches to view you since you can do so many things?
As an athlete who can excel at multiple positions.
Rashawn, thanks for your time today. Wishing you and the team success once the 2020 season gets going.
Thank you.
