Getting the job done on the gridiron at an elite level against top Texas competition during one season is an accomplishment in and of itself that can carry one on for years. But Class of 2022 running back Jaydon Blue is not happy with coasting on an amazing breakout sophomore season, he wants more and to earn the status of being “elite” on his own terms. That dedication to greatness and the physical giftings has already made the Klein Cain talent one of the best in the nation.
If his team needed six inches, three yards, or an explosive play that rallies the squad to continue the fight, Blue was there to deliver in 2019. The 5-11, 205-pound, back was everything a running back needs to be carrying the rock 205 times for 1,612 yards with 20 trips into the end zone and balanced out his every down abilities with 15 receptions for 108 more yards. The all-purpose nature was reinforced on special teams with eight kicks taken back for 134 yards.
The skills, 4.48 speed, and productivity against Texas 6A defenses has propelled Blue into four-star recruiting status with 24 offers extended. With another big season ahead, and an offseason full of non-stop preparation, Blue stepped inside the RNG Lab for a detail update.
Interview
Jaydon, you had an explosive sophomore season rolling past 6A Texas defenses for over 1,600 yards on the ground. What was working for you leading to the big season?
“During my freshman year, I had a good season then and we won district. I knew I would be on varsity, they asked me halfway through the season but I said no. After my freshman year I worked every day, got faster to prepare for my sophomore season; I performed well.”
What were some of the play calls the coaches were using to get the ball into your hands?
“We ran mostly inside zone, stretches, and option plays.”
Your talents as an all-purpose back grew a year ago as a receiving threat out of the backfield. How did you see that part of your game develop?
“It helped me a lot. Most running backs cannot play as a receiver or catch like that. I don’t do running back stuff when I workout, I work on route running and ball catching skills to be a better all-around player.”
It shows. The speed you have makes explosive plays a regular occurrence. How fast are you?
“My 40 time is 4.48 and I ran a 10.6 in the 100.”
Is there an area of your game that might get overlooked because of the other standout traits to your abilities?
“One thing that was left out last year was my ability to run routes and catch. Most people see my running plays, they did not put me out wide much last year. This year, I will play outside receiver and slot receiver to get the ball more in open space.”
Are you taking on all the same roles in 2020 or will you be doing anything differently within the offense?
“No defense, just offense and kick returns. If they need me on defense, I will go on defense.”
What have you been focusing on with your game this offseason?
“Mostly I have been working on route running, catching, and in the weight room getting stronger.”
Let’s talk recruiting. Which schools are showing interest?
“I have been talking to Clemson and Notre Dame, really they are the only two that have not offered yet.”
How many offers have been dropped?
“I have 24 offers.”
Impressive. Which programs were the last couple to offer?
“Georgia Tech and Maryland.”
Blue’s Offer Sheet (24): Alabama, Arizona State, Arkansas Auburn, Baylor, Georgia, Georgia Tech, LSU, Maryland, Mississippi State, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Penn State, SMU, Texas, TCU, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, and USC
Going back to last season, have you visited any programs?
“Yes, I went to LSU, Tulsa, and UT (Texas) of course.”
How did the LSU trip go? What did you do?
“They took us around the school. We went on the field and did a photo shoot in the uniforms.”
And how did the Texas visit go?
“We did the same things.”
When the campuses open back up, are you planning any visits?
“Yes, I want to visit USC, Oklahoma, Alabama, Oregon, and Ohio State.”
Given your talents and high profile as an elite running back, what pressures do you feel associated with that, and does that attention serve as a motivator for you?
“No pressure, but it motivates me. When I hear people talk about how I am an elite back, I want to be better than I am now. That is why I work every day, to be better.”
A few minutes ago, you mentioned your time in the 100, which events are you competing in with track?
“The 100, 4×1, and 4×2.”
When does the team report as a group to begin preparation for this fall, or have you already?
“We started on Monday, but we are still social distancing. On June 22 is when we can all get back together.”
After a break from the action, what has you excited to be back at it?
“I am super excited. Even right after the varsity season last year, I was already to get back playing. During the quarantine, I was playing 7v7 to keep me active until we started working out as a team again.”
What goals have you set for your junior run?
“My goal this year is to have around 30 touchdowns or more rushing, double my yards, and play more as a receiver making some big catches and scoring some touchdowns for my team.”
Jaydon, thanks for your time today and good luck with the rest of your summer workouts until we talk again.
“Thank you.”
