A test was thrown Elias Larry’s way during the 2019 season, and he came out of the fray as a national talent on the rise. The 6-0, 170-pound, corner took on some of California’s best receiving talent out of the Mission League compiling a stat line of 24 stops, 19 solo, with a tackle for a loss, two picks, and six pass breakups. The work on the field for the Class of 2021 defender has brought three offers to the doorstep with teams looking in as he prepares for a big senior season with state powerhouse Sierra Canyon.
To talk about his play on the field, recruiting, and transfer, Larry stepped inside the RNG Lab for a detailed Q&A.
Interview
Elias, you were getting after Mission League quarterbacks and receivers last season as a corner with the Knights. Seeing all that talent in your conference, how did your game improve as a defender?
“Playing against good receivers each week, that makes you play at a higher level. You have to bring it each week playing against players as good as you. Overall, in situational play my game improved, like on third and long knowing what to do and when to do it, that was a big improvement. I saw more on the field last year.”
What were some of the coverages you were running a year ago?
“Cover 3, we ran that mostly, Cover 2 and some Cover 1.”
This offseason you made the switch to Sierra Canyon. How will your athletic talents be used on the field with the Trailblazers this season?
“I haven’t gotten to practice with them yet. This season I am helping wherever they see me so we can win a state championship.”
What defensive front and coverages will the defense execute this year?
“I have an idea from the Zoom meetings, a lot of man to man. That is probably what we will do most.”
Which parts of your game have you focused on improving before the season begins?
“This offseason I have been working more on press coverage, we did not run a lot of that at Notre Dame, and all the basics – footwork and making sure I am in shape to start practicing and get ready for the season.”
How have you been preparing this spring for your senior campaign? What has been your daily workout routine?
“I workout five times a week doing field work and mainly, right now I am trying to get bigger in the weight room.”
What is the best 40-yard dash time you’ve posted?
“4.6.”
Going into recruiting, which schools are showing interest ahead of your senior season?
“Yale, Harvard, Columbia, Idaho, Colorado State, Sacramento State, Eastern Washington, and Army.”
Impressive. How many offers have been extended to you so far?
“Three: UPenn, University of San Diego, and Air Force.”
Going back a few months, did you get to take any visits before the dead period began?
“This winter we did a tour of the Ivy League schools, we visited 17 schools. I saw Yale, Harvard, Boston College, Columbia, Holy Cross, UPenn, Princeton, Brown, and schools like that.”
That sounds like a really fun trip. Looking ahead, are there any planned trips you may take?
“I plan on taking some when they figure out when you can take them. It all depends on when it opens up and what is going on at that time.”
Makes sense. Elias, thanks for your time today and good luck with your workouts this summer until we talk again.
“Thank you.”
