Everything is coming up roses for Class of 2018 offensive lineman Sean Boles. His Van Meter High School squad finished the 2016 season 11-1, he’s added 15 pounds of muscle during the off-season, and he just knocked the ACT out of the park scoring a 32. On the recruiting trail, Boles has secured eight offers with big camps coming up at Stanford and Iowa and planned visits to every Ivy League school this summer. Ahead of a whirlwind of activity that is sure to bump up his offer count, I got a quick catch-up interview in with the 6-6, 320 pound, three-star Iowa talent.

Interview

How did spring practices go for you?

“Van Meter doesn’t do spring practices, but spring lifting went very well. My main goal was to focus our incoming freshmen and lowerclassmen, and to get their work ethic on track. As of right now, I feel like our team is very cohesive, and has a much better shot of making state finals than we did last season.”

How did your skillset improve this spring? What was your focus?

“Football-wise, I saw large improvements in physical strength, specifically in core strength and leg strength. When I wasn’t lifting with my football team, I took time to lift on my own, which helped a lot with functional strength and specific movements that directly apply to my position on the field.

“In the later part of spring, I shifted my focus much more towards conditioning and explosive exercises, as well as exercises on a “release”. I feel like having done these types of exercises has prepared me much more for this summer’s camp rotation.”

Did you max out in the weight room?

“Not recently.”

Did any college coaches come to Van Meter to see you practice this spring?

“All of the Ivies, UVA (Virginia), Mizzou (Missouri), Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota, NDSU (North Dakota State), Air Force, and NIU (Northern Iowa) came by VM.”

Which camps have you attended this spring and summer?

“Just Notre Dame’s so far. I did not get to compete for the entirety of the camp. We drove from Des Moines to Southbend that day after I took the ACT. I got over an hour on the field during the camp. I did well against a lot of four-star players there.”

Do you have any camps coming up?

“Stanford on June 22-23, Iowa on June 25, and maybe a few Ivy camps in July.”

What has you excited about the Stanford camp?

“They only have one offer out to an offensive lineman at the moment, and he does not seem to be very interested in Stanford. Additionally, I feel that I’ve improved a tremendous amount between a year ago and now, and that I will definitely impress coaches there, whether they be Stanford coaches or not.”

Which schools are showing recruiting interest in you but have not offered?

“Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota, Air Force, Notre Dame, Miami of Ohio, UNI, and NIU.”

How many offers do you have now and from which schools?

“I have eight offers from Dartmouth, Yale, Penn, Brown, Cornell, Colombia, Princeton, and the University of Virginia.”

Which schools have you unofficially visited this spring?

“Penn, Yale, Virginia, Notre Dame, and Minnesota.”

Do you have any upcoming unofficial or official visits planned?

“I’m planning on visiting every Ivy League school this July so that I can get a more thorough understanding as to what each school can offer in terms of athletics and academics.”

When do you start fall camp with Van Meter?

“The second week of August.”

What goals have you set for yourself for your senior season?

“My largest personal goal would be to always get to the second level on every single run play, no matter the circumstance. I also want to be able to say that I never let anyone beat me on a pass block this season, which unlike getting to the second level, will be a greater challenge for me technically than it will as a conscious effort.”

Sean, thanks for your time today and good luck with your upcoming camps.

“Thank you.”
