We see it happen time and time again on the gridiron. A cocky quarterback looks at a 5-11, 175-pound, corner and thinks he can get one in over on him despite what the game film states otherwise. That was the season Class of 2019 corner Davin Wilson turned in for Rancho Verde High School in 2018. The result was a three-star recruiting status, 34 tackles, two passes broken up, a fumble recovery, nine interceptions, and offers from Bowling Green and Sacramento State as Wilson’s Mustangs squad raced to a 13-1 finish.

In an RNG exclusive, I sat down with one of the overlooked corners in California’s 2019 class to learn more about his ability to thief a pass along with his recruiting prospects that includes his first official to Bowling Green this weekend.

Interview

Davin, the Mustangs were a beast to handle for the opposition on both sides of the ball in 2018. On defense, what were you guys doing so well to hold teams to 14 points per game?

“We stopped them at the line, we were physical, and we played as a team. Our DBs locked up their receivers and we had the defensive line putting pressure on the quarterback to throw it up. Their quarterbacks were not doing much against us the entire season. We shut them down.”

You put on a show taking the ball away from the opposition this year with nine interceptions. What is the secret to your success?

“Honestly, reading the receivers. After playing both sides of the ball, I can read the receivers and see what he is trying to do.”

How did your overall game as a corner come along during your senior year?

“The area of my game that improved the most was my man technique. I worked hard during the offseason. I improved my footwork and worked on getting my eyes on their hips so could play the man perfectly.”

What are the strengths of your game against the run and the pass?

“Being physical and being physical at the line. I can level up with any receiver. I’m not that big, but I can size up with the running backs to make the play against the run.”

If there is one game of yours that shows all your talents and abilities college coaches should watch, which game would you pick?

“The game I would have them watch would be the Bishop Alemany game.”

What did you do well in that game?

“I played physical, I was a team leader, and I made the game go smoothly. You can see that I was calling everything out and I made plays.”

In your opinion, what makes you different or better than the other corners in your peer group?

“I always look to be better. I never put myself to a high standard – I am never satisfied, I am always working to be better.”

You have the offers from Bowling Green and Sacramento State, which schools are showing interest?

“I am receiving interest from Idaho, San Diego State, Southern Utah, and Cal-Poly.”

Do you have any planned visits coming up?

“Yes. My officials are starting this week. I am visiting Bowling Green.”

Nice. What has you excited about visiting Bowling Green on an official?

“I like the cold, and I have a great relationship with their coaches.”

After Bowling Green, which school or schools might you visit next?

“Idaho wants me to visit and Sacramento State is trying to book me for two weeks later.”

Davin, it was great talking to you today. Good luck with your trip to Bowling Green this weekend.

“Thank you.”
