We all know the type, the high school football player who can seemingly do just about anything and everything on the field and do it well; that is three-star 2019 athlete Sir Oliver Everett. Everett is the rare quarterback and free safety for his team and the guy helping make a big difference in the win column for Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering.

If you are a fan of west Tennessee high school football but are unaware of Everett, no worries. Everett transferred to Memphis Academy over the offseason after playing ball in Nevada for Silverado. His athletic talents are such that UNLV offered him a spot on their 2019 recruiting roster as a safety; a commitment made by Everett to the Rebels came on March 20. With his collegiate future taking him back to Nevada but still wanting to play at quarterback, Everett entered the waters of Tennessee high school football making an instant impact. Memphis Academy was winless in 2017 but are now off to a 3-1 record with their 6-3, 186-pound, QB leading the way, and with responsibilities on defense growing at safety.

In a RNG catch-up interview, I sat down with Everett to see how his senior year is going with an all-too important update on adjusting to life in Memphis.

Interview

Oliver, Memphis Academy is far and away improved in Year 2 of the football program after not winning a game last year. What is driving the team to victory on the field?

“We do everything together, even outside of football. We all hang out. If one person is there, we are all there. That helps the chemistry. We are really tight.”

How is the season going for you as a quarterback?

“It is a little rough. I have not really gotten in the groove yet. I feel like it is coming. I am finding the rhythm.”

What kind of offense do you guys run?

“We are running a spread offense.”

Where are you seeing the biggest improvement in your game within the offense?

“My biggest improvement is looking to throw more and keeping my eyes downfield.”

What about on defense, how are you seeing your game grow on that side of the ball?

“I am seeing improvement with my aggressiveness. I am going for picks and filling up the holes when needed.”

Are you getting many snaps at safety in games or in practice?

“Yes. Before the season started, I was starting at QB and safety. During our first scrimmage I slightly injured my knee. I cooled off playing safety then, but now I am back playing it again. I will play more safety in the second half of the season to help the team out.”

The next game on the schedule is Tipton-Rosemark Academy, what kind of game are you expecting from them?

“We are expecting a tough game. It is their homecoming game. Our coach said they will have a helicopter on the field. We will go out there with a mindset to get a win. We will go out there and play hard for the win. I think some of the UNLV coaches are coming to the game as well.”

What are you goals for the rest of the season?

“My goals are for us to make it to the playoffs and win state. For me personally, I want to improve all the way around. I want to improve on my decision making as a quarterback, improve my progressions and reads, and trusting my line. That is something I need to work on.”

On March 20, 2018, you committed to UNLV, how is that relationship further developing?

“It is good. I talk to them every day. They are like family. I can’t wait to get back home.”

Are recruiting others to join you on the UNLV roster?

“Oh, yes. I am trying to get Sidney Hall Jr. there. I’d like to get all my guys recruited.”

When is your next planned visit to UNLV?

“I plan to take my official after the season, sometime in November.”

Knowing the area you are in now well, I have to ask, how are you liking the Memphis area?

“I like it. I live in Cordova (TN). I am kind of away from everything, about a 35-minute drive away from the school. We are having a lot of fun.”

Have you found a favorite BBQ spot yet?

“Not yet. But, my favorite wing spot is Dixie Queen.”

You are in the cradle of Elvis country, have you become a fan of the King yet?

(Laughs) “No. Not yet, but there is still time left for that to happen.”

Oliver, always great getting to catch up with you. Thanks for your time today and good luck this week.

“Thank you.”
