Culver City High School’s football program has been on a tear in 2018 pushing through Division VII California competition for a 12-2 record. The offense has blistered along the way averaging 48 points per game while the defense has held the opposition to 18 points each time out. The fantastic run has included big wins over Santa Barbara (55-7), Milikan (43-30), Northview (40-14), and San Jacinto (61-21) to capture the CIF Southern Section title. One of the main reasons the Centaurs have been such a dominating force all season has been the play of 2020 cornerback Khary Crump.

Crump has turned into a shadow receivers cannot shake free and an ever present force against the run limiting yards on his side of the field. In stats posted through 13 games, Crump has stockpiled 61 tackles, 47 solo, five tackles for a loss, broken up seven passes, picked off three passes, forced three fumbles, and picked up one loose ball. College scouts are liking what they are seeing in the 5-10.5, 165-pound, defender with offers going out from Arizona and Oregon with interest coming in from Pac-12 and Mountain West Conference programs.

Before the Centaurs’ magical season is completed, they have one more task left taking on San Diego’s Lincoln High School in the CIF State Football Championship Bowl. To get the inside scoop on his season, Culver City’s title run, and his recruiting, I sat down with the Los Angeles area talent to learn more.

Interview

Khary, the Centaurs have been on an amazing run through the 2018 playoffs. How has the team come together for the championship and what differences are you seeing from the regular season?

“I feel that everyone is playing like it is their last game. A lot of kids on my team have a lot of talent but do not have college offers, they are playing to show what they can do. Seniors are hustling. There has been a lot more effort and competition all the way around in games and in practice.”

How have the playoff games gone for you personally?

“They are going alright. I do not feel like I am playing too good or too bad. I want a pick in every game.”

Is there anything you are doing differently or better in the playoffs thus far?

“I am communicating with my teammates better. Last season, I was worried just about me making sure I was doing my job. Now, we are echoing the calls and are thorough in about what we are doing.”

Which playoff game has been your best?

“I’d say the Santa Barbra game. I got a pick, and almost took it to the house.”

Looking at the season in totality, how did your game improve as a corner?

“I feel like I have always been a good press man corner, even as a little kid people have seen me this way. In zone, I am seeing the field better with my eyes now. I can play the ball more now in zone.”

If I am not mistaking, you had a ridiculous one-handed pick on a 50-50 ball, how did you come up with that interception?

(Laughs) “Yeah. I think that was against Santa Monica. I’m not sure how I got it, I was just trying to make sure I came down with the ball.”

You have the two offers, which schools are showing interest in you?

“The main schools are Utah, Florida, and Fresno State.”

Have you taken any unofficial visits this season?

“Yes. I visited Fresno State.”

How did the Fresno State visit go?

“It went really well. I like the staff there. The environment is right, and Fresno State is close to home, about three of four hours away.”

You guy are in the bowl game against Lincoln (10-4) on Friday, what are you expecting from the Hornets (San Diego)?

“I’ve heard they have really good receivers, but I have been going against 5-star receivers since 7v7. I look forward to the challenge. They have a Washington State commit (Don Chapman) and three or four other receivers with D-I offers. It should be a good challenge to lock them down.”

Khary, thanks for your time today and good luck against Lincoln.

“Thank you.”
