If Trey Paster’s sophomore season was a preview of things to come – opposing California squads be prepared. After transferring schools, Paster had to sit out the first seven games of the season for Buhach Colony, but in the four games he played, he made an instant impact at receiver and at corner. After pulling in five passes for 50 yards and carrying the rock three times for 18 yards with a score on offense, and coming up with 13 stops, a tackle for a loss, and a pick on defense, the 6-2, 190-pound, rising star has caught the eye of college coaching staffs. Entering his junior campaign, Paster has offers from Arizona and Nevada with seemingly every other Pac-12 and Mountain West Conference program ready to see reel on his first three games.
In a Recruiting News Guru preseason exclusive interview, I sat down with the do-everything skill position talent to learn more about his game and his recruiting prospects.
Interview
Trey, you may get this question all the time, since you excel on both sides of the ball at receiver and corner, which position do you like playing the most?
“I love playing DB. I love playing on defense. I love hitting and shutting down offenses. It is different on defense.”
What do you consider the strengths of your game as a corner?
“My strengths are my physicality and I am smart. I am athletic and tall; I have a wide base which makes it easier for me to guard receivers. I film study a lot; I call out plays on the field.”
What about at receiver?
“As a receiver, my route running and speed. My route running is a big reason why I get open. I am a taller receiver, that helps.”
Which parts of your game did you work on over the spring and summer?
“This summer, all I did was lift weights and do footwork drills. I did a lot of ban work and lifting; I was grinding all summer. This is an important season for me.”
In fall camp, where are you seeing the biggest growth in your abilities?
“Me getting to know the playbook more is making a big difference. I came in Week 7 last season after having to sit out because of my transfer. I am calling out the offense, I know all the routes, and I know what everyone is supposed to do on defense. I am even more physical. I see myself competing at a higher level while playing my style of game. I am leading by example both vocally and physically.”
I know you are also an outstanding track athlete for the Thunder, which events do you participate in with track?
“My events are the 100 and the long jump.”
I also know you are a very talented long jumper, what is your best long jump distance?
“My best is 22-feet 7-inches.”
For the track and field novice, what does that distance mean, how does that translate on a competitive level in California?
“Jumping around 22 feet, 7-inches, that set the school record. I made it to state last year jumping that. That is a pretty good mark for a sophomore. I thought it was really cool. Next season, I plan on jump 23- or 24-feet next year.”
I bet you will. Going to recruiting. Which schools are showing interest?
“There are a lot of schools – the entire Pac-12. Some of the schools that are heavily recruiting me are UCLA, Cal, USC, and Colorado. In the Mountain West, Fresno State and Boise State. On the east coast, Florida, Mississippi State, Wake Forest, and Duke.”
Impressive. Which schools have offered you already?
“I have offers from Arizona and Nevada.”
Nice. Do you have any planned visits you would like to take during the 2018 season?
“Oh yeah. I am trying to go to Fresno State, Cal, UCLA, USC, and Arizona.”
Turning to football. When did the Thunder start fall practices?
“We started three or four weeks ago.”
How is the team looking?
“We are looking fantastic. This will be a huge year for us.”
You guys open with Gregori (Modesto), have you already started preparing for that game?
“Oh yeah. We practice against their schemes on defense and offense. Our scout teams are running their schemes. We have 11 really good guys on both sides of the ball helping us in practice. That gives us a good look for Gregori.”
Are there any other games on the schedule you are hyped to play this year?
“Definitely. Tracy. That is a game I am really excited for, Merced as well. Those are two really good teams we play. We can show what we are made of against teams like that.”
What personal goals have you set for your junior season?
“My personal goals, I’d like to be first team All-League at DB. I want an overall good season. I want to stay healthy and help my team win games.”
Trey, thanks for your time today and good luck with the upcoming season.
“Thank you.”
