Throughout the 2019 season, when San Clemente High School needed a big play on defense, offense, and/or special teams Bentley Redden was there. The 6-5, 220-pound, rising star was a presence in the defensive trenches at end coming up with 36 stops, eight tackles for a loss, six sacks, six quarterback hurries, and three pass breakups with a blocked punt. On offense Redden was a key contributor to the rushing attack blocking on the outside and was targeted in the passing game covering 96 yards off eight receptions with a trip into the end zone. A deeper look into Redden’s talents and potential has intrigued college scouts. Beyond his abilities on the gridiron, Redden carries a 4.3 cumulative GPA and plays basketball for the Tritons. The total package has brought 18 offers to the Class of 2021 recruit.

In an RNG in-depth interview, Redden covers ground on his workouts this spring and summer with an update on his recruiting options.

Interview

Bentley, you were all over the field for San Clemente throughout the 2019 season. Week to week preparing for both sides of the ball, how did you attack the playbook and break down your opponent?

By watching film with my teammates going over schemes and how we will attack. We were keying in on different players and I was seeing the linemen I was going against, how I would match up against then. On offense, I would watch the cornerbacks seeing what I could do to best suit myself against the opponent.

On defense, it looks like the Tritons were doing some cool things with you at end out of a three-man front doing some stunts and twits. What all were you doing up front and what were your responsibilities in the scheme last season?

I was playing edge rusher most of the time. Using the spin move, that was one of my specialties. I was getting in the backfield and causing havoc. Every once in a while, we did some twists to keep the offense on their toes.

Going the other way, the coaches had you on the outside using your height and speed as a mismatch against corners. How did that part of your season go overall?

On offense, I did not get as many reps as I wanted but it went well for the time given. I made some big plays and did a lot of blocking, which was pretty good. I am looking forward to this season to make a bigger impact and to get those stats up.

Staying with offense, how did your game improve a year ago?

I’d say I worked a lot on footwork and route running working with a receivers’ coach over last summer. We’d work on how to get the DB on their toes and how to get their back turned.

When the season ended, what did you feel were your strengths on defense?

Last year was my first playing end; I definitely improved a lot. I had never played that position before. The spin move was my go-to move. My Hand positioning and how I was using my hands to get around the defender improved.

Do you have a favorite position?

I’d say receiver. I like it more than defense but I love playing both ways.

Once the 2020 kicks off, what roles are you taking on this season?

All the same positions, but there may be times when I am playing tight end in a double-tight.

What have you been working on this offseason with your defensive skills?

This offseason I have been doing a lot of strength training, that will help a lot. I have been lifting and working out every day. One of my good friends is a defensive lineman; we’ve been working out together working on hand work, speed, and stuff like that.

And with your offensive skills?

I have been throwing with my quarterback two to three times a week. We have been clicking, which is very helpful. I have been working on my speed, I need to work on that.

Turning to recruiting, which schools are showing interest as you prepare for the upcoming season?

TCU, Arizona, Wyoming, and Utah.

How many offers have been dropped?

I have 18 offers.

Redden’s Offer Sheet: Arizona State, BYU, Columbia, Dartmouth, Fresno State, Harvard, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Princeton, San Jose State, Tennessee, UNLV, Utah State, Virginia, Washington State, and Yale

At which position have you been offered most?

Most of the offers are as a tight end, a couple as a defensive end.

Going back to last season, did you get to take any unofficial visits?

Yes, I went to BYU for their game against USC last year.

How did that trip go?

It was good. I got to meet players from around the country and saw family up there. We had a good time.

Do you have any planned visits coming up?

Yes. This summer I am planning on going to Tennessee and Arizona State. I am not sure what will happen, but I would like to see those two. I will probably visit BYU and Utah as well.

Last question for you. What goals have you set for the 2020 season?

My goal is to be a team leader. Being a senior, I want to be one of the captains to help the younger guys. I want to make a big impact on offense and defense showcasing my skills and talents on the field.

Bentley, it was great spending time with you today learning more about your game and recruiting process. Wishing you and the team continued success this offseason with your workouts.

Thank you.
