College coaches looking for a playmaker who never gives up on an opportunity after the snap until the whistle blows, Class of 2021 receiver/return specialist Rashaun Ramsey is your man. The 5-11, 175-pound, speed burner snatched 37 passes out of the air for 537 yards with seven scores during his first season playing receiver. The Adelanto High School coaches also fed him the rock on 11 carries producing 139 more yards with two more scores and he took back 13 punts for 420 and five kicks for another 93 tallying 10 total trips to the end zone.
As one of the many California seniors needing that 2020 campaign to showcase the skills to college coaches one more time, Ramsey has been hitting the offseason hard and is getting some full-padded snaps in with club team Winners Circle this winter trying to add to his offer sheet that includes one from Arizona State.
Interview
Rashaun, it is a lot of fun watching game film on you from the 2019 season seeing all the plays that you made. Looking back, how do you feel the 2019 season went for you personally?
For me, it was a great season for me. I don’t think people knew it was my first season playing receiver. I switched from quarterback to starting receiver. It was a great season for me.
That’s cool to find out that was your first season. I had no idea. As mentioned, your playmaking skills were something else. There were more hard cuts and stop and go bursts with the ball in your hand than what a driving school instructor sees at the local high school. Besides your cuts and moves, what were some of the other things you did last season allowing to the big campaign?
(Laughs) Some of the things, you can see it on my film, I make something out of nothing. There were a lot of broken plays where I was making something better.
Through the extended offseason, what have you been working on with your skillset?
Right now, I am playing with Winners Circle club team. I work whenever I can. With my team, I am working with the guys and staying in the weight room trying to gain more weight. With my route running, I work on the cuts at the top of my route to make them faster. I also practice on high pointing the ball for the catch.
How have you pushed your speed and agility forward becoming a more athletic player on the field?
Doing different drills like the figure-eight drill, my trainers come up with things to help with my speed.
Once the 2020 season gets going, what roles are you taking on?
I will be on offense and special teams again this season. On offense, instead of being in the slot, I will play more at wideout.
What offensive scheme are you guys running this season?
A Spread.
What are some of the routes in the offense you will be executing?
With me, everything. (Laughs) I just need the ball.
What has been the practice schedule for the Saints?
We haven’t practice in a while. We were practicing, and then they cancelled. On the 8th, we were supposed to have a game starting back up on the 4th, but they cancelled it again. It is not looking too good for us right now.
Are you competing in any other varsity sports for Adelanto?
I am playing basketball and running track again.
Arizona State extended an offer, where are you in your process with interest and how you are handling this unusual recruiting process?
Every school that was showing interest, there are no spots right now. I have been working hard; a school that wants me, I will commit then.
For those college coaches out there looking to add prospects to their 2021 class, what would you bring to a college roster to enhance the team?
I bring the hard work. Anything you need, I am there. I just want to be on the field. Whatever they ask of me, I will go do.
Rashaun, it was great getting time with you today learning more about your game and offseason workouts. Wishing you success playing club ball and preparing for the 2020 California football season.
Thank you.
