College programs have fallen in love with the play of Class of 2021 tight end Miles Campbell. Campbell has worked over 6A Georgia defenses the past two seasons as that hybrid tight end/receiver becoming a “can’t miss” recruit. His 2018 run filled the stat sheet with 68 receptions for 533 yards with three scores and he carried the ball 11 times for 48 yards with another touchdown. His skills in 2019 helped take his South Paulding High School squad from a 2-8 team to a 9-4 group after pulling in 54 passes for 620 yards with seven touchdowns, amassing 720 all-purpose yards. The 6-4, 230-pound, standout added part-time work on defense as an outside linebacker coming up with eight stops, seven solo, with 3.5 tackles for a loss, 2.5 sacks, two QB hurries, and blocked two punts.

Campbell’s work has produced 11 scholarship offers so far with more schools checking in on him. With big visits happening this offseason, Campbell and I sat down for an RNG exclusive interview.

Interview

Miles, the Spartans took a big step forward on the field working from a 2-8 team to a 9-4 squad in 2019. What pushed the team to work so hard having such a great season?

“Last year, we got a new coaching staff. We did well but we lost. We knew we could compete with teams. We showed we can compete, we believed that we could win games, and we did well this year closing out games.”

The Spartans coaches utilize your athleticism in so many ways, even putting you at quarterback. Where all did you line up on the field during your junior season?

“I played at tight end, QB, X wideout, tight end, running back, defensive end, linebacker, and kick returner.”

As a tight end, you played that hybrid role lining up in the slot, on the outside, and with your hand in the dirt in tight. Given all that you did within that position, how did your overall game improve?

“My technique improved a lot. This year I was working on catching the ball, route running and the fundamentals.”

No matter if you are in tight or on the outside, when you block you get that nasty streak going. How did you take that part of your game to the next level in 2019?

“In college you can’t just catch, you also have to block. Last year I did not block well. I worked on that over the offseason to be a better overall tight end.”

You and Parker Self did a great job of splitting defenses and keeping them honest throughout the season. How were defenses trying to stop you? What kind of coverages were you seeing?

“I was seeing lots of Cover 3. They were bracketing Parker. They’d put the safety over top and a linebacker underneath with me. We would line up on opposite sides to stretch out the defense. We were seeing a lot of Cover 3 and Cover 2 defenses.”

Playing outside linebacker might not be your primary position, but when you are in you are making an impact. What was your role on defense during your junior year?

“Yes, sir. My role was to go in and make that big play. I was a container. On third and long I would go in.”

It may be too early to know, but where all might we see you on the field in 2020?

“Pretty much the same.”

Will we see more of you on defense in 2020?

“Most definitely. Our coach is leaving. I will play both sides of the ball more.”

What are you focusing on with your workouts this offseason?

“Strength and being ready to play both sides of the ball.”

How many offers do you have?

“I have 11 offers.”

Campbell’s Offer Sheet: Colorado, Georgia Tech, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Nebraska, NC State, Syracuse, and Virginia Tech

Which two schools were the last to offer?

“Syracuse and Virginia Tech.”

Nice. Which schools are showing interest?

“Georgia, Penn State, Alabama, and Oregon are showing some interest.”

From the start of the season to now, have you taken any unofficial visits?

“Yes, sir. I have taken visits to Georgia, Clemson, South Carolina, and Georgia Tech.”

What was the Georgia visit like for you?

“It was fun. It was a great atmosphere at Georgia.”

And the South Carolina trip, how did that go?

“It was good. It was cool how in-tune the fans were with the game.”

Are there any planned visits ahead?

“I am going to Georgia this Saturday, Sunday to N.C. State, and FSU next weekend.”

At which position are most colleges recruiting you to play?

“Tight end.”

Miles, thanks for your time today and good luck with your upcoming visits.

“Thank you.”
