Short, intermediate, or going deep, Lamarcus Brown was taking what defenses were giving during the 2019 season and making them pay, and that included covering large swaths of ground with his legs. The rising Blount High School gunslinger worked the Spread offense like a well-oiled machine taking the Leopards from a 5-5 squad in 2018 to an 8-3 6A Mississippi team a year ago. The action of the 6-2, 195-pound, dual-threat on the field has brought six offers and three-star recruiting status, with interest rising.
In a first visit to the RNG Lab, Brown details his growth on the field as a junior with an update on his offseason workouts.
Interview
Lamarcus, the Leopards made a big jump on the field from 2018 to 2019 posting three more wins with a playoff berth. What was the difference on the field for the offense last season leading to the successful run?
“We were more prepared than the year before. We had a better bond, more chemistry, and we knew each other better.”
What style of offense were you guys running in 2019?
“We were running a Spread offense with RPO (run-pass option).”
How does the Spread offense fit your skillset?
“It fits me well; I can run it, pull it and throw it or I can stay in the pocket and read.”
When dropping back, how were defenses trying to stop you guys? What were the fronts and coverages you were seeing?
“Basically, they were trying to force me to get the ball out of my hands fast with blitzes. We were taking short routes; that was killing them. When they were staying back, that gave me more time in the pocket and my receivers were getting open deep.”
What were some of the routes you were connecting on last season?
“Out routes, slants, hitches, curls, digs, posts, corner routes, go-routes, and comebacks.”
You were throwing just about everything on the tree. In which ways did you see your game improve as a quarterback?
“I grew a lot by reading defenses better, throwing my receivers open, being more patient and trusting my offensive line.”
Since the season ended what have you been working on with your game as a passing quarterback?
“I’ve been working on my footwork, mechanics, shoring up my release – for a faster release.”
What have you been doing to expand your knowledge of the game this spring?
“I am watching old film of myself. I will pause the film to read the defense before the play, see what will be open before the play, and then see if I made the right reads. Even in my good games I am questioning myself and the reads I made.”
That’s great. Assuming the college camp season happens, are there any you may attend this summer?
“With camps, I am probably going to Southern Miss, Missouri, and Kansas.”
Which schools are showing recruiting interest but have not offered?
“Kansas, Middle Tennessee State, Kennesaw State, and South Alabama. There are others but that is all I can think of right now.”
How many offers are you holding?
“Six: UAB, FAU, Alcorn State, Missouri, Southern Miss, and Grambling.”
Last question for you. Leadership for a quarterback is very important, how would you describe your style?
“My leadership style is very good. I love being a leader on my team pushing everyone making them work hard and to do the right thing. I stay on my “Ps and Qs”; I am not perfect. They can correct me when I am wrong or miss something, but I try to stay on top of them being a coach on the field.”
Lamarcus, it was great getting time in with you today learning more about your talents and skills as a quarterback.
“Thank you.”
