From the time Samuel Green jumped onto the high school football scene as a sophomore with JSerra Catholic, there was never any doubt his future on the gridiron would continue to the collegiate level. The big question for Green was at which position. With four offers behind him, the future looks clear.
Skilled as both a running back and defensive back, the lean for Green towards running back got stronger during the 2019 season. Playing just three games at corner, Green still racked up 28 tackles, 25 solo, with a tackle for a loss, and two passes defended. On the other side of the ball, the 5-9, 180-pound, talent split carries with three-star Class of 2020 Cal commit Chris Street. Green ended up leading the Lions in rushing yards (571) tying street for the team lead in touchdowns (7) while netting a 7.1-yard per carry average going against California’s Trinity League competition.
New challenges await Green during the 2020 season. At the winter break, the three-star Class of 2021 back transferred to Huntington Beach High School. To talk about his growth on the field, his transfer, and recruiting options, Green and I caught up in a quick Q&A conversation.
Interview
Samuel, you were a two-way warrior for the Lions last season at running back and defensive back. How did your junior season on the field go overall?
“I think it went great, but I also think I could have been more helpful to my teammates; I have been working on that. Overall, I think it went great.”
When the 2019 season ended, what did you feel were the strengths to your game as a running back?
“I knew I had to get better and I knew I had to grind more. I felt like I was good but not putting in the effort to become great. My overall strengths were my explosion and getting through that first level.”
This offseason you made the move to Huntington Beach. How will they utilize your skills on offense and defense?
“At running back and some at corner, mostly at running back this year.”
How have you been preparing for your senior season this spring?
“Grinding. All I do is grind. I workout two times a day doing push-ups, pull-ups, and I do upper and lower body strength workouts.”
Let’s close out on recruiting. Which schools are showing interest as we get into the summer months?
“San Jose State and New Mexico, the Lobos have been texting me.”
How many offers do you have now?
“Four, I just got UNLV.”
Green’s Offer Sheet: Arizona State, Florida Atlantic, Kansas, and UNLV
Going back the last few months before the dead period began, did you take any unofficial visits?
“Yes, I went to Arizona State.”
How did the visit to ASU go?
“I liked it a lot.”
Once the campuses open back up, do you have any planned visits on the schedule, official or unofficial?
“UNLV is an official visit for sure, I am not sure which others yet.”
Sam, it was great catching up with you today. Wishing you success with the rest of your workouts this summer.
“Thank you.”
