Some recruits are not necessarily under the radar, but some are on it and perhaps not valued at a level deserving of their gifts and talents. One of those players may be not getting his full credit is Class of 2021 receiver Brock Bowers. Bowers was an unstoppable force for Napa High School during the 2018 season snagging an estimated 40-plus passes for 654 yards with eight trips into the end zone. His 6-3, 220-pound, frame makes him a nightmare matchup for defensive backs, especially in the red zone. His elite speed, posting 4.55 at an Opening regional, puts him on par with every other defender he will face anywhere on the field. Ten teams have done their homework on Bowers with each extending an offer. As word of Bowers’ talents spread, expect the scholarships extend to rise in a hurry.
In an RNG exclusive, I sat down with one of the top receivers in the Golden State getting insight on his game and early recruiting prospects.
Interview
Brock, your game reel from last season was impressive. What all was working for you on the field leading to the big year you turned in for the Grizzlies?
“I felt like I could get open whenever I needed to, and when I got the ball I knew I could make a play.”
It appears that you have put a lot of time into your game working on your hands. What are some of the drills you do to improve your catching abilities?
“Actually, I don’t do a lot drill specific for my hands, I focus more on footwork. My hands have come naturally after doing a lot of regular catching.”
Some may see you as a tight end, but for a wide out, you have explosive speed. What is the best-timed run you have posted?
“At The Opening I ran a 4.55 (laser timed).”
*118.59 SPARQ score
That is fantastic.
“Thank you.”
I have asked you about your speed and hands, what are some other strengths to your game?
“I think it is a combination of speed and size. If there is a corner as big as me, I am faster than him. If there is a corner as fast as me, I am taller and stronger.”
What have you been working on this offseason?
“I have been working on my footwork, getting stronger, and faster.”
Will you take on any different positions during your junior season?
“I will run more in the slot and more on the line. I might be at running back, kick returner, and outside linebacker.”
Did you go to any college camps this summer?
“I went to the USC Elite Camp.”
Tell me about that camp.
“It went really well. That is when they offered me.”
Nice. What was that moment like for you getting offered on the spot after a camp performance from a big school like USC?
“I was surprised. I was not expecting anything like that to happen when I went to the camp.”
I know colleges are finding you and liking what they are seeing. How many offers do you have now?
“I have 10 offers.”
Bowers’ Offer Sheet: Arizona State, California, Nebraska, Nevada, Oregon State, San Jose State, Tennessee, UCLA, USC, and Utah
Have you visited any colleges this offseason?
“Yes. I went to UCLA and Reno (Nevada).”
What were your thoughts on the UCLA campus?
“I really liked the campus, it was cool. Their facilities are really nice. It was a cool place.”
The Nevada visit, how did that go?
“It was cool. I really like the area around Reno. The campus was really pretty.”
Are there any planned visits for this summer or into the fall?
“I am thinking about going to some games this fall but I am not sure how it will fit in with my season.”
Are you playing any other sports for Napa?
“I play basketball.”
I see now. Helping you with your hands. Makes sense. Last question. What goals have you set for the 2019 season?
“I want our team to do well this year. I think we can make a run in the playoffs this year.”
Brock, it was great spending time with you today learning more about you and your talents on the field. Wishing you continued success with your summer workouts.
“Thank you.”
