The 2019 season was a successful run for Stockton’s Lincoln High School and Jomarion Briggs. The Trojans put together a 9-2 season while Briggs put together a three-star recruiting status campaign. Playing on both sides of the ball, the 6-1, 160-pound, speedster took out 27 ball carriers with eight passes broken up and two forced fumbles playing everywhere in the secondary. When the field was flipped, the rising California prospect brought down four passes for 126 yards with two scores and took seven handoffs for 45 more yards.
In an RNG first-look, Briggs stopped by the Lab to mix it up covering his play last season, offseason workouts, and rising recruiting status.
Interview
Jomarion, you may have skills on offense but after watching game film on you it appears you have the heart and mentality of a defensive player. You bring it on defense. What fires you up to play at such a highly competitive level on Fridays?
I am more of a defensive player. Playing at my school, we are always fired up. The best 11 are on the field all the time. I do what I am supposed to do in the game no matter what.
What coverages were you guys running last season and where all did you line up in the Trojans’ secondary?
Last season we ran a lot of man, Cover 3, and some Cover 2. I lined up at corner, some at nickel, and some at safety.
Which areas of your game have you been working on this offseason?
I have been working on my footwork, defensive fundamentals, guarding people, getting faster and getting stronger. I am ready to bring it on defense for my junior year.
How have you added more speed to your talents over the spring, summer, and fall months?
I do resistance runs, weightlifting, squats, leg lifts, and I just run. I get faster when I can carry my speed longer, that helps me a lot.
What is your best 40-yard dash time?
My top time right now is a 4.5. I have run a 4.4 unofficial before.
Nice. Where did you post the 4.5?
At The Opening.
You got a few snaps in on offense as well last season. Will we see more of you on that side of the ball when the 2020 season gets going?
Yes. I still will play a lot on offense, whatever I can do to help my team. The best 11 are on the field on both sides of the ball. I will be there doing my thing again this year.
What is the Trojans’ practice schedule?
We are off now because of Thanksgiving. We typically practice on Monday, Thursday and sometimes Friday.
What have you been doing to stay sharp beyond lifting and conditioning?
I have been going to a gym here in Stockton, doing CrossFit, and I have a small gym in my garage. If I can’t get to a gym, I go lift in my garage. At Lincoln we do some weightlifting but it is hard to do with all the restrictions right now.
Circling back to The Opening regional, how did that camp/combine go for you?
It went well. I feel that I could have done better, I scored an 88 with a 41-inch vertical and 4.5 in the 40. Last year I scored a 90, but ran a 4.6.
A 41-inch vertical is amazing right along with a 4.5 laser-time. Awesome job.
Thank you.
Let’s wrap talking about recruiting. Which schools are showing interest as the 2020 season nears?
The main schools showing interest are Fresno State, Colorado State, Cal, Arizona State, and some from Oregon State. I was hit up by Oregon not that long ago, NAU, Utah, and New Mexico are also showing interest. That’s all I can think of right now.
When visits get going again next year, are there any schools you’d like to go see?
I’d like to visit a lot of schools, but it is all based on the virus. I have already visited Oregon, Oregon State, UC-Davis, Cal, Sac State, and Stanford. If possible, I’d like to visit Cal again and I’d like to see Colorado and Fresno State.
Jomarion, it was a lot of fun going over your game and recruiting today. I appreciate your time. Wishing you success over the next month preparing for the season.
Thank you.
