As LL Cool J famously penned, “Don’t Call it a Comeback”, Beau Green has been here for years. The Class of 2022 quarterback has been spinning it since 2018 when he threw for 1,021 yards with 11 touchdowns while posting four rushing scores with Downey High School. Jump to the 2020 season this spring with California’s Trulock High School, Green (6-2, 210) got back on the field showing all of us why he is rated as a three-star recruit with offers from Auburn, William & Mary, and Yale.
With college camps on the agenda this summer, Green stopped by the RNG Lab for an update interview.
Interview
Beau, the game film I got to watch on you from the 2020 season this spring showed you doing a little bit of everything, carrying out your fakes, scrambling, throwing on the run, and your dual-threat talents. With the action on the field, were you happy with the progress shown?
Yeah, I was really happy in terms of coming back from injury (shoulder) after rehabbing to do what I did. I was able to show my athleticism and dual-threat abilities doing multiple things. I was happy with the highlight reel.
What offensive scheme were you executing during the 2020 season?
It is a real Spread/Air Raid. It is a new offense. Our offense is built around RPO (run-pass option) with lots of quick game, and not a ton of true play-action. It is an Air Raid with lots of RPO.
Getting those live action reps, how did your skillset improve?
It is good to get live reps and have a live rush with live defensive backs flying around. It was the first time in a while with the quarantine. I did well mentally knowing what will happen before it happened with my pre-snap read and knowing where to go with the ball. I was able to slow down from a mental perspective.
With your footwork, what are you working on this spring?
This spring I am working on speeding up my feet and focusing on keeping a smooth upper body while staying relaxed. Before, I would push and force balls. Now I am staying smooth and fast with my feet. That will improve my overall stroke.
And with your throwing mechanics, how are you pushing that to the next level?
I am trying to strengthen my arm to push it further downfield. I am doing lots of plyometric-ball stuff and working on my deep game.
Are you guys running the same offense in 2021?
Yes, we are running the same offense. Lots of Air Raid with RPOs. After my offensive coordinator saw my athleticism, I think we will do more QB run game stuff.
How are you building chemistry with your guys this offseason building upon the 2021 campaign?
We are having player-ran practices once or twice a week. We’ve grown up together in a small town. We enjoy each other and have great chemistry already, but we are building upon that with 7v7 and more player-ran stuff that will improve it.
This offseason, have you been to any national camps?
I went to Under Armour two weekends ago in Mission Viejo and Rivals on Sunday. They both went very well. I did a good job. I am going to the Elite 11 Regional on June 7th.
Are you going to compete at any college camps?
Yes, I have been invited to quite a few around the country, and I am talking to those coaches right now. We are working on dates and finalizing everything. I will probably be at 10 camps in June.
Which ones might you attend?
The Fresno State camp for sure, and the Sac State; the entire Pac-12 will be there.
Let’s get into recruiting. Which programs are showing interest ahead of the camps?
I am talking to Fresno State, Nevada, BYU, and San Diego State.
Which schools have offered you so far?
Auburn, William & Mary, and Yale.
Are there any recruiting visits you may take this summer?
I am not sure about officials yet; I am thinking about taking visits with the camps. Yale is one I plan on visiting as an official visit.
Beau, it was great catching up with you today. I’m looking forward for an update on the college camps this summer. Keep us posted.
Yes, sir. Thank you.
