The outside linebacker position has become a “skill position” on defense with multiple duties attached to the spot. No longer are outside backers bangers containing with coverage in the flats. The evolution of the game has demanded OLB stuff the run, contain, come off the edge, and cover in a zone or in man depending on the scheme. The man for all seasons at Lincoln High School is David “DJ” Peevy.

The 6-3, 210-pound, San Diego area defender is coming into his own physically and as a technician of the game. His potential has onlookers from Arizona, San Jose State, and San Diego State, among others, with an offer extended by Morgan State.

Making his first visit to the RNG Clubhouse, Peevy covers ground on his sophomore campaign with a look at his offseason preparations.

Interview

David, it may not have been a full season, but how did the 2020 campaign go for you with Lincoln this spring?

It went great for me. I liked the season, and that we got it, but I wished for a regular season, a 10-game season. I wanted to do more. It went so fast.

No doubt. What defensive scheme were you guys executing and where all were you lining up within it?

Our defense, in the first three games I lined up outside in a 4-4 and in a 4-3. In the Saints game, we were in a 3-4. In the 3-4, I was at outside linebacker too. I played outside linebacker the entire season.

Coming up to high school, what positions were you playing?

I came up as a receiver, safety, and corner. With the weight gain, I am playing tight end and outside linebacker and end.

Going into the offseason, what have been the key parts of your game you have worked on preparing for the 2021 schedule?

Eww. I want to be more physical, that is what I am working on. If I had more physicality, I would have made more plays this season. My hands, I am working on my hands with technical movements on the line. I need to learn how to run with this weight. I was 160 pounds. Running with 210 pounds, it is different. It is not the same, but I am getting used to it now.

Where all might you line up during the 2021 season?

Outside linebacker and end, and maybe tight end. I don’t know yet.

What are some of the lifts you’ve been doing in the weight room?

Bench, pullups, hang clean and power cleans, squats, deadlifts, leg press, lunges, and calf raises.

What are you doing for speed training?

I run track. I run two or three times around the track before I begin to get my conditioning up for more endurance so I can run with this weight longer.

Which events are you competing in this year?

I run the 100, 200, 400, 4×1, 4×4. Coach tried to put me in the 800 but it was too much.

Yeah, that’s a lot of work in a meet. Which is your best event?

Probably the 200 and 4×4.

What is your top time in the 200 this year?

The Last time I ran it was a 22.8. In the 400, my split is a 53.9. That’s not that fast for a 400, but I was super tired.

David, thanks for taking time out today to update us on your offseason workouts. Wishing you the best of luck this summer as you prepare for the 2021 season.

Thank you.
