College coaches across the country have been waiting to see the reemergence of Class of 2020 quarterback Luca Diamont on the field, and it is finally happening, and in a big way. A standout freshman season at the varsity level for Venice High School put Diamont on recruiting boards after slinging the ball around the gridiron for 2,066 yards with 21 touchdowns and 315 yards on the ground with four additional scores. An off the field injury kept the rising 6-2, 180-pound, gunslinger on the sidelines in 2017, but his workouts in spring practices with college coaches watching have impressed; enough that he now has seven offers with the SEC leading the way.

In a Recruiting News Guru stylized catch-up interview, I spoke with Diamont right after his most recent offer from Mississippi State.

Interview

Luca, how are your offseason workouts coming along?

“My offseason workouts are going great. I have been lifting and throwing every day. I have been throwing for coaches almost every day, coaches from all over the country.”

Which schools have been represented on the Venice sidelines during practices?

“Florida, Alabama, Penn State, USC – a lot of schools. I’m just ready to get back on the field and play some real football.”

Is there an aspect of your technique that you are intently focused on before the 2018 season begins?

“Raising my football IQ. I have been working on that with my brother (Zander Diamont – Indiana Hoosiers). We have been going through plays and reading defenses. I have been doing the same things with my head coach and QB coach. I am always working on my timing with my throws, and working on getting stronger and faster.”

How have spring practices gone with Venice?

“They have been great. We are ready, we’ve been playing a lot of 7v7.”

How does the team look?

“We are looking great. We have a lot of athletes on our team. We are ready to put on a show.”

I got to see you throw at the UCLA camp on Saturday, it looked like you were in regular season form. How do you feel the camp went?

“At first, I was doing great. I wanted a better 40 time, but the drills overall went great. When we started throwing routes I did well, but then I started aiming it. I did not throw exactly how I wanted to throw at UCLA. There is always stuff to improve upon.”

Which aspects of your game were you able to showcase?

“I was able to show my athleticism, throwing on the run, and my athleticism going through the bags. I was able to show the overall player that I am and that I am not one-dimensional. They made drills that relate to that and I did well.”

Did you get a chance to talk to any of the coaches at the camp, if so, what feedback did they give you about your skillset?

“I got to talk to Coach (Chip) Kelly (head coach) and their QB coach, Coach (Dana) Bible. I was also able to talk to some coaches from other schools. Coach Bible told me to stay within myself, not to rush, and do what I do. They are excited to see me rip it up this season.”

Do you have any other camps scheduled for this summer?

“I have a USC camp and USC 7v7 team camp I will attend. I might go on unofficial to Alabama, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State; if there is a camp going on out there when I am there I may attend. We are still working on the dates for the visits.”

Your offer sheet has grown considerably in recent weeks, how many offers do you hold now?

“Seven.”

Which schools were the latest to offer you?

“Alabama, Ole Miss and Mississippi State.”

What was the Alabama offer like for you?

“It was awesome. My first offer off my injury. I have been building a relationship with Coach (Jeff) Banks (tight ends) since my freshman year. It was special getting an offer from Alabama.”

You got your Mississippi State offer a couple of minutes ago; congratulations.

“Thank you.”

How did the MSU offer come about?

“Their QB coach, Coach (Andrew) Breiner watched my freshman film, he could not believe I was a freshman. He watched video of me throwing at Venice and they fell in love. Today (Monday) they were going through 2020 QBs, I talked to him before our interview and got the offer.”

After all this hard work on your game, how does it feel to have that big breakthrough all high school players dream of on the recruiting trail?

“My dream growing up has been college ball and playing in the NFL… it feels good. Honestly, I have been focused on getting back on the field and playing ball. I have not been worried about the offers, I have always felt that will come in time and work itself out. I am just excited to play real football again. I am excited about getting smacked around and throwing passes for our crowd. I am ready for the season and ready for Venice football again.”

Luca, I appreciate your time today. Good luck with the upcoming visits and camps.

“Thank you.”
