Louisiana teams with Helen Cox High School on the schedule in 2018 all had the same really big problem in common – how to stop or limit Kelin Burrle from messing up their game plan. The 6-0, 210-pound, linebacker was a beast on the field using his speed and power to stuff running plays and his knowledge of the game as a standout cover-backer. When the 2018 season had ended, the four-star recruit had earned All-State and All-Metro honors after putting an end to an estimated 117 plays with five interceptions taking two back to the house. His play has given rise to even more attention on the recruiting trail even though he is a Texas-San Antonio verbal commit.

In an RNG exclusive, I sat down with one of Louisiana’s top Class of 2020 linebacker prospects to learn more about his skills on the field with an update on his recruiting process.

Interview

Kelin, you are living every linebacker’s dream with your play in the box. I counted at least two pick-sixes last year for you, is that right?

“That’s right.”

How many passes did you pick off in 2018 and what was working for you so well allowing you to get all the interceptions?

“I had five interceptions. The thing that was working well for me, everything was based off work in practice. I was reading the routes, following the QB’s eyes, and jumped the gun.”

Your speed and explosiveness to the ball stands out, what are some of the other traits to your game that makes you such a productive linebacker?

“My ability to read plays and making open-field tackles.”

What are you working on this offseason with your game?

“I am in track right now. After that, I am going into my offseason workouts. My main goal is to maintain my speed.”

Are you going to any national camps and/or combines this spring?

“Yes. I am going to the Nike Opening Regional and I am going to the Under Armour All-American Camp.”

You committed to Texas-San Antonio on June 16, 2018. When you committed to UTSA, what was it about the program that made it your ideal fit?

“It felt like home over there. I feel like I can progress over there.”

Which schools are showing interest in you but have not offered yet?

“I am receiving interest from Navy and Houston.”

How many offers do you have now?

“I think I have 14 offers.”

Which school was the last to offer you?

“South Alabama.”

Kelin Burrle’s Offer Sheet (14): UTSA, LSU, Tennessee, Kentucky, Colorado, Kansas, South Alabama, Louisiana Tech, Southern Miss, Tulane, Alabama-Birmingham, Northwestern State, West Virginia, and Texas A&M

In general, what is the pitch you are hearing from new college coaches wanting you to commit to their program?

“They like my speed. They like that I am a sideline to sideline player, and that is what these colleges are looking for in an outside linebacker.”

Do you have any visits planned for this spring?

“Yes. I am planning on visiting Colorado and Houston. I am also going back to UTSA for a visit.”

You mentioned competing in track earlier, which events?

“I am competing in the 4×2, 200, and 100.”

Nice. Which event do you like best?

“I like the 100 but I have my best time in the 200. I ran a 22-flat.”

That is impressive. Kelin, thanks for your time today and good luck with the rest of your track season.

“Thank you.”
