Some Class of 2021 high school recruits have been thrust into a very difficult and unfortunate situation. The want to get to the collegiate level early to begin forging that part of a childhood dream has for the first time ever comes into conflict with the initial mission, finishing with one’s high school team. The spread of the Coronavirus has pushed back the start of the 2020 season in many states, and in California it will not kickoff until January 2021. That means top talents like Class of 2021 four-star Mater Dei cornerback Jaylin Davies will miss his senior season as an early enrollee with the Oregon Ducks. For some, the sting of missing a senior year is bigger than others. With the Mater Dei, Davies and the Monarchs are always in contention for a state and national championship leaving the feeling of unfinished business on the field that was left out of their collective hands.

In an RNG update interview, Davies catches us up on his workout and how his relationship with the Ducks’ coaching staff continues to grow.

Interview

Jaylin, how have the offseason workouts been going for you personally?

They have been going pretty good. I have been training with Winners Circle, Coach Rob with Rharebreed, and meeting with a DB coach, Coach Brown.

Where are you seeing the growth and improvement in your technique with the time put in over the spring and summer?

The growth has been working on my speed and building my body up for college.

What kind of drills have you been doing to add more speed, agility, and twitchiness to your game?

Lifting and working with Coach Rob going up hills and running in the sandpits.

Have you laid down a 40 time this offseason?

No, but I am training to do a 40 now.

Even though it may be in limited action, how are the Monarchs looking this offseason?

We got shutdown, but in our workouts before then everyone looked good. We looked good.

With the delay in the opening of the 2020 season in California, how are the Monarchs approaching workouts this summer and going forward?

Right now, we are not doing anything. Before we were lifting and doing individual film study, but we had no contact. We are waiting to find out now for how everything will go going forward.

On June 19 you verbally committed to the Oregon Ducks. What have you been doing since then to continue building a bond with the coaching staff?

Talk to Coach Rod (Chance – cornerbacks) and Coach (Mario) Cristobal (head coach) every day. The connection is building for the time I get there. By then it will be really strong.

All coaches love giving tips and advice to high school prospects. What are some of the tips you’ve received that you are adding to your game ahead of your senior season?

Working more on returning the ball after the pick for a touchdown. With my technique, it has all been the same throughout high school and since the seventh grade. I am just making sure I still have it.

Are you helping with recruiting?

Definitely. I am trying to get some 2021 guys and some 2022 guys from my school. I am talking to a few guys.

What is your pitch?

They are a top team and they are building a team that will compete with the SEC teams like Georgia. They are building something bigger than the Pac-12. A lot of the high school kids already know that already and they know it is a good fit for Cali kids.

Are you planning on being an early enrollee?

Yes.

With the season pushed back, how everything is lining up you may not get a senior season. That has to be tough.

It is a letdown. It is disappointing to not get to play with my friends and with Coach Rollo (Bruce Rollinson) one more time.

On a lighter note to end the interview. When we last spoke, I asked you my virus buster question, what you’ve been watching to entertain yourself during the quarantine. Let’s get an update on your Netflix watching. What shows and movies have you been watching this summer?

I watched The Order on Netflix, the last QB1 – I have been watching pretty much everything. And The Last Dance.

Jaylin, thanks for updating us on your summer workouts. Wishing you continued success with your efforts this summer.

Thank you.
