If watching an intricate offense with weapons all over the field made to look easy is a thing of beauty for you, watching Class of 2021 quarterback Miller Moss working Bishop Alemany’s scheme is a must-see event. The Warriors (5-1) have been a team on fire this season stomping out 43 points per game with Moss guiding the flow, and the talented bunch was just given a wake-up call making what was already an impressive group with something now to prove the rest of the way out.

The rise of Moss in Alemany’s offense was sharp and concise a year ago hitting 202-of-353 passes for 2,714 yards with 19 touchdowns leading to a 7-5 season. Over the offseason, the Warriors continued the hard work needed to morph a unit with a lot of potential into a seemingly unstoppable force. Moss is threading the needle in 2019 having completed 97-of-146 pass attempts for 1,569 yards with 12 touchdowns. What’s scary, within the offense, the ball is primarily being distributed in the aerial assault among four players, Deonce Caldwell, DJ Justice, Kevin Green Jr, and Jashawn Todd. Of the four, only Caldwell is a senior, meaning this group is going to be a powerhouse yet again next season.

College coaches have caught onto the talent upstairs and in the arm of the 6-2, 203-pound, Los Angeles area native. To date, 15 offers have gone out and Moss has already begun the process of evaluating programs with numerous visits taken. In an RNG update interview, we sat down for a midseason review.

Interview

Miller, the Warriors have been putting so much pressure on the opposing teams by scoring an average of 43 points per game. What are you guys doing so well leading to the big production?

“A huge thing for us is balance. We have two D-I backs and a great offensive line. They have to pick their poison against us, stop the run or the pass. The ability to do both helps us.”

Which game this season has been your best and why do you consider that to be the best performance?

“Ohh. That’s a hard question. Personally, I think our Week 2 game (at Higley) was the best. I did not have the most touchdowns or yards, but I had a high completion percentage. It was over by the third quarter and I was pulled. My efficiency in running the offense made that one my best game.”

What are defenses throwing at you trying to force you into a mistake or into an uncomfortable spot in the backfield?

“A lot of times, what we see on film is not what we are seeing in games. Our offense is so diverse, so they are dropping eight or nine bring pressure with three. The flip side of that, some will go Cover 0 trying to force the ball out of my hands quickly. Teams are scheming up against us. It is difficult, but understandable to see it. It is a good thing for us to see different things each week which will help us in the playoffs.”

How have you worked on your game to counter blitzes or extra defenders playing zone against you?

“Our RPO (run-pass option) game is huge, that counters that. It puts defenders in a bind. The formations we have and motions we use help us ID coverages.”

With the experience gained this season, where are you showing the biggest improvements?

“This season I am moving around better, but the huge thing is my efficiency; I think I am around 66 percent passing. Also, I am limiting turnovers.”

It is always fun to catch up on recruiting. How many offers are you holding?

“I have 15 offers.”

Moss’ Offer Sheet: Alabama, Auburn, Boston College, California, Colorado, Georgia, Harvard, Kentucky, LSU, Michigan, N.C. State, San Jose State, Stanford, UCLA, USC, and Yale

Are there any schools showing interest that have not offered yet?

“The two schools I am talking to who are showing interest but have not offered are Stanford and Clemson.”

From the summer up to now, have you taken any unofficial visits?

“Yes. I have been to USC for two games, UCLA, Cal and Stanford as well.”

How did the Cal visit go?

“They lost unfortunately, but it went well. I have a great relationship with their staff. I like what they are building at Cal. I feel comfortable up there, and I love the Bay area. It was an awesome visit.”

And the Stanford trip?

“They are a lot slower in their recruiting process. I am not upset with that; I know they recruit top quarterbacks. It is new with them in the recruiting process. I am super excited about the process with them. It was fun meeting the people in the program and the people at the school. There are so many fascinating people there. Stanford is a super special place with the people at the school and the school itself.”

Are you planning any other trips for this fall?

“I may go to Georgia, but that is not set in stone. I may go to LSU and back up to the Bay Area for another visit with Cal. I may go to a couple of local schools as well.”

Taking a loss is never fun, but it can be a great learning lesson. The Bishop Amat (25-24) game did not turn out as desired, but how do you think that game will end up helping you guys through the rest of the season and into the playoffs?

“You never want to lose, but I think it served a purpose. We’ve been winning by 40 or 50 points. The loss, it keeps us humble. They were a solid team. It is good to know we are not invincible and it is good to know that we have to compete each week; nothing has been given to us. We have to remain humble and realize we have not arrived yet.”

The Warriors travel to Chaminade (3-4) on Friday. What are you expecting from the Eagles defense?

“Coach (Ed) Croson (head coach) has been at Chaminade for a while. They have been running the same stuff for a couple of years, that is not too much of a variation. We will do what we do and push for the outcome we want.”
