There are certain defensive positions on the gridiron that can severely limit what any offense can do, and one of those is at corner. If a team has an outstanding corner, one side of the field is taken away on passing downs allowing the rest of the defense to adjust accordingly. At Bishop Gorman, they have a game changing cornerback in Class of 2022 standout Fabian Ross. Ross (6-1, 185) took on top receivers from Utah, Hawaii, and California before the Gaels even began their Nevada conference schedule earning four-star recruiting status for his efforts. The 2019 season ended seeing Ross rack up 20 stops, 18 solo, with three picks, one a pick-six, and knocked away 12 hopeful passes. The other result of his hard work, 12 scholarship offers have been dropped in his lap.
In an RNG first-look, Ross covers ground on the growth to his game with an update on his recruiting process.
Interview
Fabian, the Gaels always play a tough schedule that challenges the players in preparation for the Nevada playoff run. Going against all those tough teams in the non-conference schedule and during the playoffs, how do you feel your talents grew last season as a corner?
“Playing against the different teams, playing against different receivers in each state, and with different sizes, I learned about the different receivers from around the nation last season. Last season I was learning the different routes and seeing where they line up on the field to run those routes.”
What coverages were you guys executing in the secondary last year?
“We were doing Cover 4, man, Cover 2, and sometimes Cover 3.”
You were out on that island by yourself taking on the best of the best. We talked about how your game improved, once the season was over what did you feel were the strengths to your game overall?
“I feel like my strengths were man press, my technique overall, and my footwork was one of my overall better strengths during the season.”
What do you like about playing corner?
“I like to compete. I like to go out there against a receiver and battle for four quarters. The competitive nature of being a corner is what I like.”
Where all might you line up on the field in 2020?
“Right now, I am at corner, and I am trying to get on offense and special teams as well.”
What have you been working on this offseason to take your game to that next level?
“This offseason I have been working on my speed, cleaning up my technique, working on my breaks, and working a lot on my speed.”
Going into recruiting, how many offers are you holding?
“Twelve.”
Which schools are showing interest but have not offered yet?
“Washington and Oregon.”
Ross’ Offer Sheet: Arizona State, Arkansas, Kansas, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, Oregon State, Penn State, USC, and West Virginia
Going back to last season, did you get a chance to take any visits?
“The only visits I was able to get in were to USC, Arizona State, and Washington.”
How did the USC visit turn out?
“That was after the Rivals camp. A lot of our players on the football team went down there and checked it out. We got a tour and met all the coaches. It was a great experience there.”
And the trip to Washington?
“That was a game day visit. Before the game, we saw the facilities. I didn’t get to talk to all the coaches, but we watched the game. It was a cool experience.”
Last one. How did the ASU visit go?
“It went well. We went there after a 7v7 tournament. We won the tournament and the next day we went up there. That was a great visit. We saw the facilities and talked to the coaches. It was a great experience.”
Once the campuses open back up, are there any planned visits you’d like to take?
“Yes. I’d like to go to Michigan – I have never been there, back to USC, and Arizona State as well. All the schools that have offered and the ones showing interest, I’d like to visit if I can. I want to see the environment at these schools; I want to visit as many schools as possible.”
Fabian, thanks for your time today. Wishing you the best of luck with the rest of your workouts this summer until we talk again.
“Thank you.”
