College football defensive coordinators looking for a hard-hitting safety who can fill the alley, intimidate across the middle, and cover deep have fallen in love with Kamari Ramsey. Ramsey (6-1, 193) filled the stat sheet during his sophomore season as Sierra Canyon made a run to the California state title game with 80 tackles, 51 solo, a tackle for a loss, one quarterback hurry, 17 passes defended, four picks taken back 118 yards, and one forced fumble. Four-star recruiting status has followed the Class of 2022 recruit along with 19 offers.
Picking up on his offseason workouts ahead of California’s kickoff to the 2020 season in January, Ramsey sat down to update us on all that he has going on this fall.
Interview
Kamari, the Trailblazers were a powerhouse during the 2019 season making a run to the state title game. How has that success carried over into the offseason in team workouts?
We are wanting to get back where we were. Last season, we did not reach our goal. We’ve come up short twice now. The hunger to get that goal is pushing us to work even harder.
Playing safety within the defensive scheme, what were your roles and what were the coverages you guys were executing?
We ran a lot of zero coverage and Cover 3. My role at free safety was to keep everything in front of me.
Once the season ended, what did you feel were the strengths to your game as a defensive back?
Tackling, that has always been one of my strengths. That comes natural to me. Zone coverage, that was another strength to my game.
Going into the offseason, what were the small details to your game you worked to improve upon?
I’ve worked on my feet, hips, off-man, and press man.
What were some of the workouts you’ve been doing to add more speed and burst to your skillset?
We ran hills, did workout in the sand, pulled sleds for 40 to 50 yards, and medicine ball runs.
Did you get a 40-yard dash time in this offseason?
Yes. I ran one at a Winners Circle Camp. I ran a 4.5.
Where are you seeing the differences in your preseason workouts from a year ago?
My man coverage and pass coverage in general have improved. As mentioned, my tackling has always been a strength. My focus has been on covering. I am reading the quarterback better and locating receivers better than in my first two years.
Where all will you be lining up once the 2020 season kicks off?
Not too much on offense, but you will see me on defense and special teams.
What’s the practice schedule going forward for the Trailblazers?
Right now, we are practicing three days a week with the full team. We can do offense and defense, but we have not started special teams yet.
Let’s close out talking about recruiting. Which schools are showing interest this offseason?
LSU and Fresno State.
How many offers do you have now?
I have 19.
Nice. Which two were the last two programs to drop an offer?
UCLA and UNLV.
Ramsey’s Offer Sheet: Arizona State, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, Oregon State, Penn State, Stanford, Texas, UCLA, UNLV, USC, Utah, Virginia Tech, and Washington
Before the campuses shutdown back in March, did you get to take any unofficial visits?
Yes, I went to USC for a visit.
Have you taken any virtual visits?
Yes, I did one with Stanford and Ohio State.
Once the campuses are live again for recruits, which programs would you like to see in-person?
I want to go to Ohio State, Arizona State, Oregon, Washington, USC, UCLA, and Stanford. There are a lot of schools I would like to go see.
With time between now and the start of the season in January, what are the goals you have set for yourself?
Staying in the best shape possible and making sure my grades are right, better than last year. We don’t have games right now and are not practicing as much; I am making sure I am on top of all my stuff.
Kamari, always great catching up with you. I appreciate your time and wish you continued success this offseason.
Thank you.
