Winning a high school football conference title is not easy, and deserves recognition. Taking home a state championship at any level in any state is memorable – what Tayvion Beasley and his St. John Bosco teammates did during the 2019 season was historic, and for more than one reason. The Braves supplanted league rival Mater Dei off back-to-back California and national championship runs bringing the trophy back to Bellflower. Along the way, Class of 2022 cornerback Beasley took on some of the top five-, four-, and three-star skill position recruits in the nation tallying 24 stops, 19 solo, with a tackle for a loss, a pick, and six passes broken up. The recognition of talent against top competition for the 5-9, 166-pound, defender has brought four-star status and six scholarship offers.

In an RNG catch-up interview, Beasley sat down for a Q&A covering his growing abilities on the field with a push to repeat in 2020.

Interview

Tayvion, during the 2019 season you got to see and witness first-hand what it means to be a national champion. How has the team’s success last season motivated you this offseason?

“It motivates me to push the new team and be more of a leader so we can go back-to-back.”

How did the challenges of last season, playing all the tough teams and under that spotlight, help you grow as a player?

“It helped me more as a person than a player. The competition makes me better. It makes me play harder knowing they want to beat me in a one-on-one matchup.”

When the 2019 season ended, what did you feel were the strengths to your game as a cornerback?

“I felt like I could guard anyone. We ran a lot of ones in practice, going into the game it was easy. For me, my teammates, they were the best in the country and I was facing them in practice. In a game, you are not better than my teammates. Playing against my teammates made me better.”

Is there an area of your game that might get overlooked?

“My speed, football IQ, and ball skills.”

Speed is such a big part of your game. What is your fastest timed 40-yard dash?

“At Bosco I ran a 4.4 hand-timed.”

Nice. When the 2020 season kicks off, what roles are you taking on beyond playing corner?

“This year I will be playing nickel, and I might go on special teams too.”

To prepare for your junior season, what all have you been working on this offseason?

“Staying patient, being more hands on with receivers, and staying square to the receiver.”

What has been your daily routine to keep your skills sharp?

“Pushups and I workout at home. I am lifting weights with a teammate, Jaxon Harley, and I run on the beach.”

This summer, if the college camp circuit happens, are there any camps you may compete at or receive more instruction.

“Probably USC, UCLA, but I am not sure about out of state camps. The closest ones I can go to, I will go; maybe Cal.”

Which schools are showing interest but have not offered yet?

“Washington, they came to school to see me, and Penn State.”

How many offers do you have now?

“Six.”

Which two were the last to offer you?

“Oregon State and Michigan.”

Beasley’s Offer Sheet: Arizona State, BYU, Michigan, Oregon, Oregon State, and USC

Going back to last season, did you take any unofficial visits before the dead period began this winter?

“Right after we won state, Beaux Collins, Nate Burrell, Max Gibbs, and I went to USC.”

How did the USC visit go?

“It went well. We went to a basketball game and did a photo shoot. I knew everyone there, and I talked to the coaches. Coach Donte Williams (CB) and I talked; he had just came to USC from Oregon.”
