Interview
MJ, whenever we talk, I always want to find out what you’ve been working on with your skillset and where you are seeing the growth. I know you are always hard at it improving the small details of your game, what have you been working on this summer?
The main thing I have focused on is the mental side of the game. I want to be one step ahead and more advanced in that area, doing that makes my game so much faster.
Going deeper on what you just touched on; film study is another key part you bring to the field for a practice and game. What have you been studying and what are some of the things you have learned this summer that will help you once the 2020 season gets going?
I’ve been studying tips, line protections, coverages, and watching a lot of film. I’ve been working hard on all that.
How have you worked with your teammates and receiving corps this offseason building that bond that will pay off in wins this season?
I just transferred to Pace Academy, I got here last week. I played here in middle school.
Oh wow. I did not know that. What kind of offense will you be running with the Knights this season?
It is a great offense, an RPO offense. I will make a lot of reads in it and it will help me in college. This season I will be under center, in the gun, and in the Pistol.
What are some of the routes your receivers will be running within the scheme?
We have the digs, drags, post-corners, and smash concepts. There is a lot of play-action, roll outs reading left and right and to certain parts of the field. With the routes, I will be throwing short, intermediate and deep stuff – go balls, all sorts of stuff.
Sounds like a lot of fun for you.
Yes, sir.
Let’s turn to recruiting for a minute. Have all the schools offered or are there still some showing interest?
Pretty much all have offered. I have been talking to Stanford a lot. They take a long time to offer. They want to make sure it is the right fit. I have been keeping in a lot of contact with Coach (Tavita) Pritchard (OC/QB).
How many offers are you now holding?
Thirty-one.
Morris’ Offer Sheet: Akron, Alabama, Alabama-Birmingham, Alabama State, Appalachian State, Arkansas, Auburn, Coastal Carolina, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Howard, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Mississippi State, N.C. State, Nebraska, Oregon, Penn State, Savannah State, Southern Miss, South Florida, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Valdosta State, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia
Wow. Virtual visits have been a great way for college coaches to connect with recruits during this dead period, have you taken any virtual visits?
Yes, I have taken a couple. I took one with Michigan, Mizzou, Georgia Tech, one with Stanford recently, Florida, Florida State, an academic one with Penn State, and another one with Oregon.
Are there any planned campus visits for you once things open up?
I would like to see a lot of schools that I have not visited yet like Michigan, Penn State, Stanford, and Mizzou. There are a lot of schools that I have not seen that I would like to see.
As you gain more offers and have more options for the next level, what are the things that are important for you to learn about a program and/or university when you speak with college coaches?
From my position, does the coach have a lot of experience with quarterbacks and has he developed them for the NFL. Other than that, I want a place where I feel at home. I will be there for three or four years, I do not want to think about leaving, I just want to become the best quarterback I can be.
Regardless of the coach and/or program that coach represents, what makes a quality recruiting meeting in your eyes?
I’d say a conversation that talks about the school, how they see me in the offense and how they see me at that school. I like talking about future stuff, the success in their offense, and how they run their offense.
Now let’s look ahead. How has fall camp gone with the new team in this short stint?
We have our first game on Sept. 4; we were pushed back two weeks. I have been learning all the plays and getting those down.
Do you have any games circled on the schedule as a top or rivalry game?
I don’t look at who we are playing. Even if it is against a good team or one not as talented, I focus on my game. I stay the same and do not change anything week to week.
What personal goals have you set with Pace for this season?
No set goals for me but to get better as a quarterback and develop. I don’t have the goal stats set for yards, I let it happen naturally. If I focus in, all that stuff will come.
I like it. MJ, great talking to you as always. Good luck this season with Pace Academy.
Thank you.
