One of the titans of high school football in the United States is the state of Georgia. The Peach State is as deep as any other area consistently turning out phenomenal talents to the collegiate and professional ranks. One of the teams that has staked their claim among the football elite in Georgia is Carrollton High School, and a big thanks to that goes to the play of Class of 2022 quarterback Myles “MJ” Morris.
Morris got meaningful varsity reps as a freshman in 2018 showing glimpses of what the future holds for his career. During the 2019 season, he was cracking 6A Georgia defenses with his arm, legs, and mental talents covering 2,186 yards through the air completing 60.6 percent of his passes with 20 touchdowns while covering 379 yards on the ground off 58 carries with eight individual trips into the end zone. His talents helped the Trojans from a 10-3 team in 2018 to a 12-1 squad last season.
With the skills on full display, recognition of Morris’ talents has rolled in from everywhere. The four-star recruit holds 28 offers, and from seemingly every Division I football program east of the Mississippi River.
In another RNG longform Q&A stylized interview, Morris sits down to talk about his improving skillset and busy camp and visit recruiting opportunities in the coming months.
Interview
Myles, your game took off last season working over 6A Georgia defenses. Looking solely at the growth of your game as a quarterback, what are you most proud of with the strides you made?
“Most proud of the whole team. We went undefeated in the regular season. For me, I am proud of how I played under pressure. We played some big teams last season. I played calm, we played great. The guys look at the quarterback for leadership. With my game, I improved at reading defenses; I knew what they were doing before the snap of the ball.”
The Trojans executed the Spread last season, what were some of the routes you were throwing to within the scheme?
“We ran a lot of things, a “sail” – a go 10-yard out dig on the backside, and a lot of quick game stuff. If the defense was playing 10 yards off, we’d go quick and then hit them with the deep ball.”
When you were dropping back, what were the coverages you were seeing from teams trying to stop you?
“A lot of them were either man, a lot of Cover 2, but mostly Cover 3.”
Once the season ended, what did you feel were the overall strengths to your game?
“My strengths, even though they had me as a dual-thereat, I was staying in the pocket looking downfield for a receiver. If I went outside, I could run and make them miss and throw the ball downfield to make a play.”
This offseason, what have you been doing to expand your understanding of the game?
“I’ve been doing a lot of intense film study. We’ve had meetings with our head coach, Coach (Sean) Callhoun, that is the most important part of my growth is my head. If I am one step ahead of the defenses, I will be that much better than everyone. I have been working on that the most this offseason.”
Which parts of your skillset have you been working on this spring?
“Putting more touch on the ball. I am good at it, but when you can drop it in over the linebacker you open up the offense even more; I want to excel at those kind of passes.”
During the quarantine, what has been your daily routine?
“Since we cannot go to a gym, we have weights and a bands at home, and we have a big backyard. I have been working on my footwork, drops, and agility making sure my drops are smooth and fast. I have been working on the little things.”
If the college camps happen are there any camps you plan on attending this summer?
“Yes, sir: Florida State, Michigan, Oregon, Penn State, and probably Miami and Alabama.”
Going into the summertime, which schools are showing interest but have yet to offer?
“Vanderbilt, Arizona, Arizona State, Clemson, Northwestern, and Stanford, those are the main ones right now.”
Since we spoke last, your offer sheet has grown tremendously. How many offers do you have now?
“I have 28 offers.”
Morris’ Offer Sheet (28): Akron, Alabama, Alabama-Birmingham, Alabama State, Appalachian State, Arkansas, Auburn, Coastal Carolina, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Mississippi State, N.C. State, Nebraska, Oregon, Penn State, Savannah State, Southern Miss, South Florida, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Valdosta State, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia
That is fantastic. Congratulations.
“Thank you.”
Going back to September, did you take any visits leading up to the dead period this winter?
“Right before everything was cut off, I visited Tennessee for a Junior Day. I was going to Alabama, but we had a school thing and I could not attend that.”
The Tennessee visit, how did that go for you?
“It was really nice. Their facilities are insane; they have really nice facilities.”
Once the campuses open back up, are there any planned trips on your schedule?
“Definitely trying to get to Michigan, Oregon, Penn State, and Alabama again. I want to go to the schools I have not been to yet to explore all my options before the final decision.”
Makes sense. Last one, my virus buster question. What have you been doing for fun over the last couple of months to entertain yourself?
“We have a dog; he keeps me entertained. I have also been playing Madden and indoor golf; I have something I chip into.”
MJ, thanks for your time today, it was great catching up. I hope the rest of your workouts this offseason go your way.
“Thank you.”
