As the story of Class of 2022 athlete Trejon Williams plays out, a learning lesson about listening to one’s parents with the best of intentions comes through. Williams took off the 2018 season from football, but jumped back into the game last season showcasing his God given talents in dynamic fashion with a nudge from his loved ones. With this gift, Jefferson High School did not hold back working their 6-1, 185-pound, skill player at receiver, safety and corner, and as a kick return specialist with great results. Williams snagged 14 passes for 251 yards with two scores and carried the rock 11 times for 156 yards with another trip into the end zone. On defense he stopped 37 plays, 20 by himself, with two tackles for a loss and two interceptions. The abilities and upside were rewarded with first team PIL honors, four-star recruiting status and 10 offers to choose from so far.
The extended offseason has not been lost on Williams. The Portland area product has been hard at work refining his skills on both sides of the ball while amping up the dial on individual strength and conditioning workouts. To talk about it all with an update on recruiting, Williams stepped inside the RNG Lab.
Interview
Trejon, you worked really hard throughout the 2019 season to earn that athlete label. Looking back, what were some of the things you were most proud of with your accomplishments and play on the field?
First, I want to thank my parents. They motivated me to get back after being off for a year. They got me to chase a dream they can see me doing. I thank them first, and I thank the coaches helping me to the place I am now and where I will be in the future.
Before we got together for this interview, WD-40 called me and said you were slicker than him. Your moves, agility, and burst in space makes you so very dangerous. Where do those instincts come from to juke out all 11 defenders two and three times over for an explosive play?
(Laughs) It is my genes. My family played basketball and football; it is in the genes. I am in to that, but if I do not need to do it I don’t do it.
Last season on defense, you were lining up all over the secondary. What coverages were you running with the Democrats and where all did you apply your trade?
We mostly ran a Cover 3 or Cover 6. Last season I was mostly at free safety helping others and played some corner; we played some Cover 2 and man too.
When your sophomore season had ended, what did you feel were the strengths to your game on defense?
Reading the QB, reading the QB and the routes, and pursuing to the ball quickly.
Same question, but for offense? Besides your moves, what makes you such an explosive offensive talent?
On offense I brought energy on the field so we could be a good team overall. I believe I have very strong hands.
What have you been doing this offseason to improve upon your speed and agility?
This offseason I have been working in the weight room to get my muscle up and I have been doing a lot of sand workouts; got another one in today. Overall, I have been doing a lot of receiver and DB workouts, and working on my back pedal. At receiver, I have been working on attacking the DB quickly and not using as many steps out of my breaks.
When the 2020 season gets going, where all will we see you on the field?
I am staying at safety and receiver. I will line up at kick returner like last year, but they never kicked it my way.
Where are the Democrats with fall camp to start preparing for the season?
We have not started yet. They just came out with the schedule, on Feb. 22nd we can practice two times a week until our season begins on March 16.
With what you have seen so far, how is the team looking for the 2020 season?
I feel like the team is looking great. We have a lot of starters back from last season; we are looking good. This season we have some new coaches; I believe our head coach will bring the pieces to help us win a state championship.
For the 2020 season, what goals have you set?
I want to lead the state in picks, make All-State first team, and become a better overall player.
Let’s close out getting an update on recruiting. Which schools are showing interest this offseason?
UCLA, USC, and Cincinnati; those are the ones I know of, but there are more.
How many offers are you holding?
Ten.
Williams’ Offer Sheet (10): Arizona State, California, Indiana, Kansas, Nevada, Oregon State, Utah State, Washington, Washington State, and William & Mary
Going back to last season, did you get to visit any programs before the dead period began?
I took a visit to Oregon State to see them play Stanford.
How did that visit go?
It was good. They showed that they are all about family there. It was a really good experience.
When visits are allowed again, are there any you’d like to take?
I want to visit Washington, Arizona State, Cal, and Kansas too.
Trejon, it was a lot of fun getting to learn more about you and your game on the field today. Thanks for your time and good luck throughout the extended offseason working on your game.
Thank you.
