After a first team Freshman All-American performance in 2019, collegiate scouting eyes are on four-star Class of 2023 defensive end/outside linebacker Jeremiah Calvin. Scouts know how athletic he is, also playing receiver and earning All-Area honors as a punter last season. All they want to see is the further development of his skills shedding blocks, tracking down running backs, and destroying California quarterbacks. Three offers are down with top national recruiting interest rising as Calvin’s Muir High School team hits the midway point of their 2020 season this spring.
In an RNG update conversation, Calvin takes onto the field going over his roles on offense and defense with a look at his potential recruiting visits this summer.

Interview
Jeremiah, the Mustangs have started the 2020 season 2-1 winning the last two games in blowout fashion. How is the team looking heading into the Burbank (0-3) game on Friday?
Confident. It was weird at first during the first three weeks of practices preparing for the season and in our first game. We were still coming together and we didn’t get the 7v7 period. We were still getting used to each other. Now our practices are more fun and competitive, and we are getting to know each other.
Playing end in the Mustangs defensive scheme, how are opposing offenses working to limit you?
Double teaming me, if I am not at linebacker. I am getting double teamed a lot.
When you line up at linebacker, where are the positioning you?
At outside linebacker. They will send me on blitzes from time to time from the outside and they also drop me back into coverage.
In the three games played, where are you showing the most improvement on defense?
I have no problems with defense, offense is the real struggle. In our first couple of games my quarterback and I did not have the best connection but we are connecting now.
On offense the coaches have you lining up on the outside. What are some of the routes you are running this year?
Lots of fades, posts, meshes, digs – pretty much anything, screens too. They have me running the “big boy” stuff for possession catches or setting us up to score.
Going the other way, how are defenses trying to stop you?
They put the safety over the top so I can’t go vertical. The corner will play 15 yards off, which is annoying. The only team to come near me was La Serna, and that did not work for them.
For the totality of the five-game 2020 schedule, what do you want to accomplish?
I want to win the rest of our games, keep getting used to my teammates and keep preparing for next season. I want to give a shout out to my teammates: Baylin Brooks, Jack Clougherty, Will, Charles Bennett, Matt Fowler, Allen Bennett, Jasun Ridley, and Ethan Bowers.
When the season concludes, are there any camps you may attend?
UCLA and USC, those are two definite ones. Where my brother ends up at, I will probably go to that camp.
Which programs are show interest at the midway point of the 2020 schedule?
Notre Dame and Florida, are the two most recent ones that I know of. North Carolina, UNLV, and some HBCUs are also showing interest.
Which schools have offered?
Washington State, Sac State and Valparaiso.
This summer, when the dead period lifts, are there any visits you may take?
Arizona State and Arizona, USC would be a good one. Oregon has all the gear, that would be a good one too. There are some SEC schools that I’d like to see. I want to see their stadiums and get the feel for their programs.
Jeremiah, appreciate your time today. Wishing the Mustangs success on closing out the season strong.
Thank you.
