When the 2017 high school football season had ended in California, a breakout star emerged from Linfield Christian (Temecula). The Lions turned in a 5-5 season watching do-everything junior talent Travion Brown prove to be unstoppable on the field. The list of positions where Brown can heavily impact any game is long, just like the list of college football scouts lining up to make the 2019 recruit a future member of their roster.

Brown’s growth on the field during his sophomore season suggested big things were around the corner. In just four games, he secured 12 passes for 213 yards with five trips into the end zone. On defense, he stuffed 32 plays with 25 solo stops while coming up with seven tackles for a loss, 3.5 sacks, and a fumble recovery. Given a full season to display his athletic talents, he handed out writing cramps to stat trackers. Playing in all 10 games, Brown had 95 tackles, 18 tackles for a loss, 5.5 sacks, 10 quarterback hurries, one fumble recovery, and one interception playing inside linebacker, outside linebacker, and defensive end. When the field was flipped, the 6-3, 200 pound, playmaker went at it with 217 rush yards on 24 totes with six scores and snagged 47 passes for 728 yards with nine more good reasons to celebrate.

After earning first team All-League offense and second team All-League defense honors, the offers extended from college programs started to stack up. So far, eight scholarships have been presented to Brown from Arizona, Oregon, Nevada, Colorado, Boston College, Syracuse, Washington State, and Utah. With another year of making opposing California squads look silly, one can easily make the assumption that his offer sheet is soon to double as long as he stays on the open market.

In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I caught up with one of California’s top 2019 all-around athletes to get the four-star recruit’s perspective on his junior season with an update on his recruiting process.

Interview

Travion, you were all over the field on defense last season playing some inside linebacker, end, and outside linebacker. Do you like playing all the different positions on the field?

“Yes, sir. I did.”

Of them all, which is your favorite?

“My favorite position is outside linebacker.”

The roughly five-yard pick-six you had, that was over before it happened; that was a great play. What was going through your mind when you saw the ball coming your way?

“It was just a reaction play. My quick thought was just to make the play. The quarterback stared at the running back right away. I jumped on the ball and scored.”

Which areas of your game improve on defense last year?

“My coverage got better last year. That has improved a lot. I also got better at reading offenses.”

Which parts of your game are you working on this offseason?

“I am mainly working on my hips for faster lateral movements. I am working on reading offenses faster as well.”

You kind of mirrored your accomplishments on defense flipping the field on offense last year. Where all did you line up on the field in 2017 on offense?

“I lined up at outside receiver, in the slot, at quarterback, running back, and tight end.”

Your abilities as a receiver cannot be denied, what were some of the things you did well last year as a receiver that allowed you to be so successful?

“My wide receiver coach helped me a lot. I used his techniques in the game. Corners don’t like to press big receivers, I took advantage of that and ran with it.”

Where all will we see you on the field in 2018?

“All the same positions, but maybe not at quarterback. As long as our QB does not get hurt this year.”

Because you have the ability to play so many positions, at which position are the different schools recruiting you to play?

“The main position is at linebacker. A couple of colleges say they are recruiting me as an outside linebacker and some are recruiting me as a hybrid safety.”

How many offers do you have now?

“Eight.”

Which schools are showing interest in you but have not offered yet?

“UCLA, Arizona State has been contacting me, I’m receiving emails from Harvard, and Fresno State is another school showing interest.”

Did you take any unofficial visits during the 2017 season or in 2018 already?

“I took unofficial to Arizona and Oregon last year.”

Do you have any upcoming visits planned yet?

“No, sir. Not yet.”

Are you playing 7v7 ball this offseason?

I will play with my high school.

Are you eyeing any college camps this summer?

“Maybe a few, but I’m not sure yet. There are a couple I might go to this summer. I might go to the Redlands camp with Nebraska.”

What goals have you set for yourself this offseason?

“I want to get bigger and stronger. I want to be a leader on the field through my actions not just my words. My biggest goal is to lead my team to a state championship in 2018 and have fun doing it.”

Well said. Travion, thanks for your time today and good luck with the rest of your offseason workouts.

“Thank you.”
