The beginnings of something special took place during the 2020 season with McAdory High School, and that was the emergence of running back Roderick “Rod” Thomas. The 6-0, 210-pound, power back lowered the boom on Alabama 6A defenses taking on the tough carries rolling for 308 yards on 80 totes with three touchdowns scored. A highly focused offseason workout regiment is underway for the Class of 2023 tailback. The focus is on speed, agility, and increased explosion every time he touches the ball. From the sounds of it, Thomas is set for a big junior campaign in 2021.

Making his first appearance in the RNG Lab, Thomas covers ground on his varsity season and spring workouts.

Interview

Roderick, the Yellowjackets offense is multifaceted giving defenses an I-formation look with some Spread and in the Pistol. With all that you do, how does the scheme fit your skills?

I think it is a great formation for running the ball, and we can pass in it too. It is good all-around.

What were some of the plays called to get the ball to you?

We ran zone and power.

How did your overall game take off during the 2020 season?

During the season, it was my first-time playing varsity, I was a little nervous. I did not do as well as I wanted at first. But towards the end, I was doing better and had more confidence. My patience is what improved the most. I used to just run as soon as I got the ball. Now I am waiting for the hole to open up.

Going into the offseason, what have you been working on with your technique and fundamentals?

I have been training with my cousin. We work on speed and agility. And I just started outdoor track. We are also lifting weights. I am running track so I will not be stiff and loosen up for the up-and-coming season while improving my speed.

What have you been doing in the weight room to add more power?

Squats, and a lot of reps. I am not cheating myself with my workouts and I am doing as many as I can. Squats are the most important thing for me. I am trying to get more explosive.

And what have you been doing to increase your speed and agility?

My cousin is teaching me how to use my feet and using the proper form. I am working on my core, getting my core better. It all starts with your core.

Are there any camps you may attend this spring or summer?

Yes, sir. I am going to some camps. I plan to got to camps at Alabama and Auburn; a whole lot of camps.

Rod, I enjoyed covering ground with you today. Wishing you continued success with your workouts and track season.

Thank you, sir.
