Offensive coordinators are always seeking a versatile player that can create mismatches against an opposing defense. On the California JUCO fields, former Watsonville High School standout Austin Gomez worked his craft for Gavilan becoming a key go-to performer. The 6-5, 225-pound, tight end/receiver hauled in 26 passes for 294 yards with three touchdowns catching next level recruiting interest along the way with two offers on the table.
In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I sat down with the unsigned California JUCO talent to learn more about his playing career and recruiting process to date.
Interview
Austin, how did your JUCO career play out on the field?
“It played out pretty good. In my first JUCO game, we were losing by a touchdown and I caught the game winning TD (2016). In 2017, I was starting at tight end and wide receiver. It was great.”
What type of offense do you guys run?
“We ran a Spread offense.”
How are you used within the offense?
“At tight end, if we were around the five-yard line I would get a tight end pop pass. If we were driving downfield, I ran a lot of seem routes and I was used as a blocker. If we had a mismatch for me against a corner at wide receiver, our quarterback would lob it up to me. I was a red zone target and a chain mover.”
Where did you see the biggest gains in your game during your sophomore season?
“It started out great. At the start of the season, I think I had 10 receptions in our first game. I did really well high-pointing the ball; that was a big improvement. My routes got a lot better. I took route running very serious – they were nice and crispy.”
What are you working on this offseason?
“I’m training with one of my coaches, he used to play for Bengals, Titans, and Seahawks. Usually we are working on routes. We’ve worked on strength and speed, now we are on routes and catching balls.”
Which schools have extended offers to you?
“Graceland and Mid Nazarene University, the Pioneers.”
Which schools are showing recruiting interest but have not offered?
“There are a lot – I can’t think of them all right now.”
What is your graduation date?
“I graduate in the fall of 2018.”
What is your cumulative GPA at Gavilan?
“A 2.8.”
What do you want to major in at a four-year university?
“Construction.”
If a college coach reads this interview and decides to start recruiting you, what type of student-athlete are they pursuing?
“They are pursuing a responsible student-athlete.”
Austin, thanks for your time today and good luck with the remaining part of your recruiting process.
“Thank you.”
