As the maturation process continues for all high school players, senior seasons are the peak to showcase the skills where the physical talents combine with the training and understanding of the game. After an 82-carry, 832-yard, 12-touchdown campaign as a junior, big things are expected of Tyvon “Ty” Edmonds during his final run through Maryland area defenses. The 5-8, 180-pound, back explodes through defenses like a speed back but hits the hole like a power runner breaking arm tackles with uncanny balance. The role for Edmonds with Bishop McNamara will expand in all three phases of the game this season. He was credited with four receptions for 38 yards, a 57-yard kick return for a score, and a blocked punt for a touchdown a year ago; expect crazy numbers across the board in 2020 with the tag 1,000-yard rusher added to his credits.
In an RNG first-look, Edmonds updates us on all the work put into fine-tuning his craft this offseason with a look at the schools that have offered and those showing interest.
Interview
Tyvon, there are a lot of standout attributes to your game, one that I really like is how you keep your balance after contact fighting for extra yards. That toughness comes with a certain approach to the game; what is your mental approach to any given game?
I go into every game knowing no one can stop me and I try to get a victory for my team. With each win, we are one step closer to a championship… win after win.
Another part of your game that I really like is how effective you use the jump cut with a burst off your field vision. What are some of the other strengths to your game as a tailback?
My catching, I have great catching ability. Other strengths are my cuts and my blocking. I think I am a very good all-around back.
What offense were you guys running last season?
A Spread.
When your number was called, how was the offensive coordinator feeding you the rock?
Usually we did inside and outside zone plays, read options, and some powers. Most of my touchdowns were off zone plays.
Running back is penciled in, are you taking on any other roles in 2020?
This year I will play more at safety, in the slot, at kick return, and maybe punt return along with being at running back.
From a technical view, which areas of your game have you been working on this offseason?
Mostly understanding defenses and my blocking. You have to block well for your quarterback when the ball is not in your hands if you want to stay on the field.
How have you added more strength and power to your game this offseason?
I lift every day. In the morning I lift and then do sprints. Then I work on my skills at slot, running back, and defensive back training with my trainers.
What are some of the workouts you’ve been doing to add that burst and breakaway speed to your attack?
Explosion workouts like squats and one leg workouts and sprints up and down hills.
With your sprints, what is the fastest timed run you’ve posted in the 40?
A 4.59.
When did or when does fall camp with the Mustangs start?
It was supposed to start now, but with the virus we now start in January. Our camp begins on Jan. 1.
Let’s cover some ground on recruiting. Which schools have offered you so far?
Georgetown and Mary Mac in Boston.
Which schools are showing interest but have not offered you yet?
Sacred Heart, Wagner, North Carolina A&T, UNC-Charlotte, and St. Francis.
Have you taken any unofficial and/or virtual visits?
I have not taken a visit to a campus yet, I had two lined up to UNC-Charlotte and North Carolina A&T. I have taken two virtual visits to Georgetown and Mary Mac.
When allowed, are there any planned visits ahead or visits you’d like to take?
Yes, I want to visit North Carolina A&T, UNC-Charlotte, Chapel Hill (UNC), St. Francis, Sacred Heart and Wagner.
Tyvon, thanks for taking the time to go over your game and recruiting today. Good luck with the rest of your offseason workouts.
Thank you.
