The beginnings of a fantastic season were cut short in 2017 for receiver/athlete Malaki Roberson. Flashing breakaway speed and a penchant for making big plays, Roberson (5-9, 166) pulled in 16 passes for 296 yards with two scores in just four games. The three-star rated Class of 2020 recruit is back to full speed ready to rip apart opposing 4A Washington defenses, and may even see a little time at corner for Graham-Kapowsin High School this season.

In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I sat down with the speedy Graham area product covering his budding skillset and offseason workouts.

Interview

Malaki, going into your sophomore year with the Eagles, did you know you were going to be a key playmaker for the Eagles’ offense?

“Yes. My QB, Dylan Morris, and I had a big connection going into the season. We did a lot of drills together so we could make a big impact.”

Of the games played last season, which was your best?

“I’d say my best was the South Kitsap game. I did my job well in that game. In that game, I had two touchdowns, but one was called back.”

Will we see you on the inside and outside again this season, or are you adding another role to your responsibilities in 2018?

“This year, I will be inside and outside and the coaches have me doing fly routes and jet sweeps. And, I am playing corner.”

Are you excited about playing corner this year?

“Yeah. I played it early in the year last year, but more at nickel.”

What are you focused on with your game this spring?

“I am focused on my speed and having more explosiveness in my game. I am working with Heir Football Academy. They are helping boost my overall game and my football IQ.”

What do you consider the overall strengths of your game as a receiver?

“My strengths are my quickness, getting open, and my performance after the catch.”

Did you play 7v7 ball this spring?

“Yes. I played with Heir Football.”

How did playing 7v7 ball help improve your game?

“Playing 7v7 helped me learn the details of the game and helped me become more explosive as a receiver.”

Do you have any upcoming college camps on the schedule?

“I am planning on attending camps at Boise State, Oregon State, and a Louis and Clark Puget Sound Camp in Oregon.”

Have you taken any unofficial visits yet?

“Yes. I have visited UCLA and USC.”

What is your favorite subject in school?

“My favorite is math. It clicks with me. It is easy for me.”

Do you participate in any other sports at Graham?

“Track – I am working out with the team to build my speed back up.”

Last couple of questions, but back to football. The Eagles lost some key seniors last year, but had a lot of underclassmen playing big roles across the board. How does the team look this spring in practice?

“We look really good. Most of our players on offense were juniors. All of those guys will have big senior years. Our defense lost a lot of seniors, but I think we can keep it the same this year.”

What does the team need to do to make a run for a title in 2018?

“We have to stay healthy. We had a lot of injuries last year that stopped us from winning a championship. If we work hard, stay healthy, and execute every play in every game, we should have a great season.”

What goals have you set for yourself for your junior season?

“My goal is to have a big season. All receivers want to minimize dropped passes. Not that I have a problem with that, but that is one of my main goals. Another goal is to be a better leader on the team and help my team advance to state.”

Malaki, thanks for your time today and good luck with spring practices.

“Thank you.”
