Interview: Catching up with Arkansas 2015 commitment Dre Greenlaw
On National Signing Day Fayetteville High School’s Dre Greenlaw signed his letter of intent to play with the Arkansas Razorbacks. The 6’0”, 210 pound, super athlete played free safety, outside linebacker, lined up at receiver, and even had punt and kickoff returns for touchdowns for the Bulldogs during his senior season.
Greenlaw ended up signing with the Hogs over offers from Arkansas State, Georgia, Memphis, Southern Miss, Tulsa, and Washington State. Perhaps even more offers would have rolled his way had college recruiters not known how strong his ties were to the Natural State?
We caught up with Dre for an interview before he graduates from Fayetteville High School and heads a few miles down the road to don Razorback Red for his collegiate career.
Dre, which position are you training for in the offseason?
“I’m training more for safety. That’s where I know I’ll start off at with the Hogs. I feel like I can come in and make an impact there. They plan on, in the next couple of years, developing me into a linebacker but I’m starting off at safety then I’ll become a Will linebacker.”
What offseason training are you doing?
“Right now I’m in track. I do speed training three times a week with my speed trainer and I’m lifting. I’m working on my hips, getting faster for sure. I can’t wait until the season starts.”
What results have you achieved in the spring?
“I ran a 4.49 in the 40-yard das. I’m really working on that along with my conditioning. I’m not sure where my bench max is right now. I’ve slimmed down a little bit 207. I was at 220 pounds at the beginning of the season and now I’ve lost some weight.”
Have you started learning the Arkansas defensive playbook yet?
“I’ve been going to some of the spring practices. I’ve been listening eavesdropping. I’m learning the phrases. I’ve learned a couple of things by listening but I’ve not fully learned the different plays.”
How many Arkansas spring practices have you attended?
“I’ve attended two or three. I’d go to more but because of track I can’t. We have track meets on Tuesday and on Thursday and that’s when they practice. I plan to go practice on Thursday and to the spring game.”
What have you learned, what are you taking away from these opportunities?
“One thing I picked up on is always staying low. Technique is important. I need to make sure my technique is sound. I can’t take plays off and I can’t get caught dozing off. Every play you have to run to the ball and not being sloppy.”
What are some of your top times this season in track?
“I’ve run the 100m three times. I ran an 11.1, 11.08, and I’m not sure about the third.”
You’re throwing the shot put to right? What’s your best distance in that?
“In the shot my best is 44-feet.”
Do you know who you will be rooming with over the summer or in the fall?
“I think I’m rooming with C.J. O’Grady and Kendrick Jackson.
When do you officially graduate?
“May 14th.”
When do you report to campus?
“I report on May 24, the day before my birthday.”
How old will you be on May 24?”
“I’ll be 18-years-old.”
Any immediate plans or celebration plans for your graduation?
“My family wanted to go on a vacation to Florida. I’m not sure how that will workout. I report so close to my graduation that only gives me two weeks. We might change it so we can go to Florida. My siblings are not out of school until late May. Its going to be hard to get everyone together.”
Are you recruiting any Class of 2016 guys yet?
“Not quite recruiting, not too many people that I can physically talk to. We don’t have too many guys at my school the Hogs are recruiting.”
