Interview

Mabrey, let’s pick up with your offseason workouts with the Highlanders. How is the team looking through spring and summer practices?

I think we are looking really good. We have a few things to fix up, our timing on the routes stuff like that, but we are looking good. We are looking good in the weight room; everyone is getting bigger and stronger. That will help us this season.

Working with the offense, how is the chemistry coming together ahead of the 2021 season?

It is getting better since we are going on another year together. We are getting better chemistry because we’ve been together longer, and it will only get better.

Are you working with a QB coach? If so, what are you working on with that coach?

Yes, I am working out with Coach Sean Salisberry, but not so much this June with all the camps. With Coach Salisberry, I am working on not over striding and hitting the tight spots on the field with two DBs on a player.

From your footwork to throwing motion, where are you seeing the little improvements in your technique after all the work that you’ve done?

I am seeing my release speed getting quicker and faster; I have been working on that a lot. My drops are getting faster too. There are always things to improve upon.

This offseason you’ve been playing 7v7 ball with Texas Fury, how have the tournaments gone?

We haven’t done any in June. This is our first year together. We have great players on the team. I am surrounded by talent. Coach Grant is really helpful, he loves the kids. He is awesome.

Getting reps against top defenders from around the country in 7v7 action, how are you seeing your game evolve from recognizing defenses, anticipation, and slowing the game down?

Working on Zoom calls identifying coverages, I am getting quicker and faster; that will help in the fall. Playing against top DBs helps. There are four- and five-stars on these defenses. It is not like that in high school. It is helping a lot.

You mentioned all the camps you’ve been to, which camps have you competed at this offseason?

I went to Elite 11 back in March and to an Under Armour All-American Camp. For college camps, I have been to UT (Texas), SMU’s Mega Camp, LSU, Alabama, A&M, and a HBU mega camp.

The Texas Longhorns camp, how did that camp performance go for you?

It went really well. When I walked in their QB coach started talking to me. After the camp, they said someone wants to meet you, it was Coach Sark (Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian). He said he loves how I play and that he can’t wait to see my fall film.

Very cool. And the LSU camp, tell me about that one.

That was great. Right when I walked in their QB coach told me, “Dude, I am so happy you are here.” I was scheduled to go on the 17th, they were happy to see me early. He really wanted to see me perform. He’s been keeping an eye on me, he told me that he watched the Under Armour and Elite 11 film. He told me that I could definitely be a good fit for the team and the offense they run.

That’s a tremendous vote of confidence. Are there any more college camps on your summer schedule?

I am about to shut it down. I may go to Baylor and TCU camps.

After all the camps, which programs are now showing interest?

UT, Miami, FSU, A&M a little bit, Cal where my brother goes, and Alabama.

How many offers have been given to you now?

Five: Georgia Tech, Kansas State, Louisiana-Monroe, LSU, and Texas Tech.

Which program was the first to offer?

Georgia Tech, the first one always means a lot.

Getting this spike in recruiting attention, and getting to meet heavy influencers in the college game like LSU head coach Ed Orgeron, what’s this moment in time been like for you?

Honestly, it is a dream for me to be able to have this happen. I used to watch the movie Blindside. In the movie, to see all the famous coaches talking to Big Mike (Michael Oher), I have dreamed of that happening. God has helped me through this. It has been a great thing.

Mabrey, I enjoyed catching up with you again today. Congratulations on all the camp success this spring and summer. Keep up the hard work.

Yes, sir. Thank you.
