If watching film on Kyle Williams during his junior and/or senior season, the one thing that always stands out is he is the fastest guy on the field no matter the opposition. The other thing that cannot be denied, no matter where Williams lines up at a skill position, he is an impact player. Now the big question is, which college program will land this game changer out of the 2020 class?

During the 2018 high school football season, Williams (6-0, 180) was calling the shots in the huddle with Hawthorne High School. He ended his junior run passing for 2,114 yards with 26 touchdowns against just seven interceptions while rushing for 941 yards off 76 carries with eight scores in 10 games. Going into his senior campaign, he switched schools playing for St. Monica’s in California’s Camino Real League. If there was any doubt on just how athletic Williams truly is, he answered all questions and then some. Five game stats have him with 31 receptions for 763 yards reaching the end zone five times. On special teams he took back five kicks for 324 yards and three punts for 121. Lining up at corner and safety, he tallied 14 tackles with five picks. For the entire season, 1,500 receiving yards with 15 scores and 700 total return yards.

With six offers on the table and world-class track speed laying down a 10.5 in the 100, Williams might be the most overlooked three-star athlete prospect in the 2020 class. To learn more about his overall game and recruiting process, I sat down with him for an in-depth conversation.

Interview

Kyle, no offense to the other players St. Monica’s played this season, but watching game film on you, you were on another level athletically. How do you feel the 2019 season went overall for you?

“I feel like it went great. We had a short end to our season, and I feel that I could have done more but I went out with a bang. I was happy with that.”

No doubt you have jet burners on those cleats. How fast are you?

“At a Hall of Fame Camp, I ran a 4.49. My 100 times is a 10.5.”

You were an impact player in all three phases. Where all did you line up during your senior year?

“All over the field. I lined up at quarterback, receiver,  safety, defensive back, punt and kick returner – I played almost all 11 positions.”

How were they getting you the ball on offense?

“They wanted to use my speed – I got the ball on screens, quick slants, and deep balls.”

In which ways did you see your game improve as a receiver?

“My route running and my hands improved this season.”

This season was a switch for you on offense going from a dual-threat role with Hawthorne during your junior season. How did you adapt to the changes and become a better overall football player?

“Not having the ball in my hands, that made me a better leader and team player. It was more about me getting others involved instead of being the main focus on the field.”

What was your role on defense?

“My role was to be the head honcho and to get everyone to know their assignments. I would lock-down their best guy against the pass and the run.”

Where did you show the biggest improvements on that side of the ball?

“On defense, I showed my biggest improvements with my cover skills, my zone coverage, and my tackling.”

Of all the spots played, which is your favorite position?

“My favorite is receiver and defensive back. I like to burn people, but I am a hard hitter and I like laying down contact.”

Given all that you can do on the field, which schools have offered you so far?

“Colorado State, Utah, Nevada, William & Mary, Northern Arizona, and San Diego State.”

Which schools are showing interest but have not offered yet?

“Texas Tech, San Jose, Arizona, Oregon, and Oregon State.”

Have you taken any of your official visits yet?

“Yes. I took one official to San Diego State.”

How did the official visit go?

“I enjoyed myself a lot. I love the atmosphere, students, fans, and the coaches at San Diego State.”

Are there any planned official and/or unofficial visits coming up?

“In January I will be visiting Colorado State and hopefully Texas Tech, maybe Mississippi State and San Jose State.”

At which position are most of the schools offering you? Are they offering on offense, defense, or as an athlete?

“As an athlete.”

Earlier you mentioned competing in track, which events?

“The 100 and 200.”

Aside from track workouts, what are you working on this offseason to keep pushing your game forward?

“My speed and strength, my footwork, and my overall craft as a receiver and defensive back. When I get to the next level, I want to be a step ahead of everyone else.”

Kyle, thanks for your time today and good luck with your upcoming visits.

“Thank you.”
