With a smooth-quick stroke of the arm, the pigskin flies out of Nathaniel Serrette’s hands with a vapor trail behind it hitting his target in stride in the chest. With the essentials of playing quarterback drilled into the fabric of his game, he moves around the pocket with that sixth sense needed buying time for his receivers with eyes downfield as he makes JUCO defenders grasp for air. The 2019 season was a breakout year for Serrette with Nassau Community College completing 53 passes for 464 yards with seven scores posted while rushing for 190. The 2020 season was lost in New York, but the 6-1, 205-pound, veteran quarterback has been hard at work. His associate’s is in hand with three years to play three and a wide-open future that will include helping some four-year program put wins on the board.
In an RNG first-look interview, Serrette stopped by the RNG Lab for a one-on-one updating us on how he is working to perfect his craft.
Interview
Nathaniel, running a Spread set with the Lions, what is the offensive philosophy?
We wanted to move fast, get the ball out, and we were focused on stretching the defenders. As the quarterback, it is important for me to make good reads.
How would you describe your style of play?
I’m tough, I have toughness, and I am poised in the pocket. When needed, I can run a little bit to get the yards. I am willing to put my head down to pick up yards. I am a good improvisor as well. If something goes wrong, I can make a big play.
What are some of the looks and coverages you are seeing from JUCO defenses?
A lot of man, Cover 3 and 4. Sometimes we’d see a 2 Cloud. Each school ran a different defense; then it is all about our preparation. We watch the film, dissect their defense, and figure out where they will be in certain situations.
Stepping into the role leading the Lions’ offense, what have been some of the lessons learned that have helped you improve as a quarterback and leader on the field?
To really understand what’s going on you have to watch film. Getting your time in going over your notes and going over film is a really important part of the game.
During this extended offseason, what have you been working on with your footwork and hips?
To get more torque on the ball, for more power on the ball. I am trying to make sure my feet are always set on my throws. I have been working on my pocket movement so I can stay in there, take the hit and throw the ball. This offseason I have been getting into the weight room working on squats for more leg drive.
Focusing on your upper body, what have you been fine-tuning with the fundamentals?
With my upper body, my core, making sure I get my shoulder to my target to deliver it accurately, and I am doing shoulder exercises to build my arm strength.
Are there any quarterbacks you watch to learn more about that game? If so, who are you watching and what are you seeking to learn?
UCF’s quarterback Dillon Gabriel. I like his toughness and composure. I love his game. He has a big arm and he stays in the pocket; I love that.
Nathaniel, I appreciate your time today going over your offseason workouts. Keep us in the loop on your progress.
Yes, sir. Thank you.
