Seeing what Jshawn Frausto-Ramos was doing against varsity California competition as a freshman leads to the awe and wonder where he will be at with his skills when it is his time to sign a National Letter of Intent as part of the 2023 recruiting class. The 6-0, 180-pound, Bishop Alemany standout forced his way onto the field in 2019 coming up with 32 tackles, 12 solo, with seven tackles for a loss, and two sacks playing nickel for the Warriors. Watch Frausto-Ramos’ reel, the young man did not back down or fall on top of the pile for a cheap tackle statistic – the kid got after it. So much so, he has eight offers to show for it.

Stopping by the RNG Lab for the first time, Frausto-Ramos gives us insight on his freshman campaign, offseason workouts, and growing recruiting options.

Interview

Jshawn, you turned in an impressive freshman season playing varsity football with Alemany. You were that flexible/versatile guy for the Warriors defense. Which positions were you playing and what were your roles?

When I first came to Alemany, I was fighting for a spot at corner but then a senior came in. They put him at corner, but they wanted me on the field on defense. They wanted to place me in a spot that was aggressive, so they put me at nickel. My roles at nickel were guarding receivers, tackling in the box, and guarding tight ends.

You were a QB killer for those dual-threats trying to break the pocket moving up field on the ground. That closing speed, how have you worked to push that to the next level this offseason?

(Laughs) Yes. I have been working on my speed lately. I am trying to get that up. This year I will probably be playing corner. I need to be fast to guard the receivers we will face. I have been working with a trainer, running up hills, and working on my explosiveness to improve my overall speed.

You were also cutting down running backs, how have you pushed your strength to that next level this offseason?

Yeah. Coming in as a freshman, I wasn’t used to those hits. High school is way different than Pop Warner. I needed to get my strength up for varsity; the hits are different. I am getting that up. When we have our season, you will see improvement in my tackling. I have a gym set at home. I have been working on everything, my speed, strength and flexibility.

What have you been working on with your skill and fundamentals through the fall and winter?

I have been working on my off-man. My press man is good. I am also working on being patient. I am not a patient corner, I am an aggressive corner. But I want to be versatile. Coaches are not always going to want me to play man.

When the 2020 California season gets going, which roles are you taking on for the Warriors?

Corner, kickoff, I am not sure about kick return yet. I am ready to hit some people on kickoff. They might have different packages for different teams putting me back in the box. Wherever they want me, I will go.

Are you playing 7v7 ball this offseason?

Yes. I am playing with Premium.

How is 7v7 action going for you?

It has been really good. We’ve won a few tournaments. We won one in Arizona and one in Fresno. Last week we lost our first tournament.

With all the extra work put into your game and getting reps in 7v7, where are you already seeing the gains in your skill this winter?

Definitely with my off game. At Alemany, we do not always run man, same with Premium. I am learning from my coaches, applying what they are teaching me and trying to perfect it.

Nice. Let’s talk recruiting. Which schools are showing interest?

The only ones that I know of are Stanford and Cal.

How many offers do you have?

Eight.

Which programs were the last couple to offer?

FAU and Michigan were the most recent.

Which teams was the first?

Oregon State.

Frausto-Ramos’ Offer Sheet: Arizona State, Colorado, Florida Atlantic, Kansas, Michigan, Oregon State, USC, and Virginia Tech

Picking up that first offer from the Beavers, what was that moment like for you?

It was very special. I was with Premium, and with all my friends. My coach pulled me out, and we went to the office. They told me, “we like the way you play, your style, and we want to offer you.” It was very cool to be around my brothers when I got it. We got to celebrate together.

When visits, hopefully, pick back up soon, which schools would you like to go see?

I want to visit all the college to be honest. Michigan, FIU, Colorado, and Kansas… every school that has interest in me. I have never been in the snow. I’d like to see an environment like that.

Jshawn, it was fun getting time in with you today learning more about your skills and workouts. Wishing you, Premium, and Alemany success working towards your goals.

Thank you, sir.
