There is no other way to truly capture the 2017 season Travion Brown had for Linfield Christian other than amazing. The 6-3, 207-pound, all-around athlete was absolutely prolific compiling stats on both sides of the ball for the Lions working his way to four-star recruiting status. If Brown’s preseason goals for his senior year are accomplished, opposing California squads are in for a long season.

In four games during Brown’s sophomore season, he showed a glimpse of things to come on both sides of the ball coming up with 213 yards on 12 receptions with five scores while putting an end to 32 plays with seven tackles for a loss, 3.5 sacks, and one fumble recovered. As nice as his per game stats were in 2016, he blew everything out of the water on offense in 2018 hauling in 47 passes for 728 yards with nine trips to the end zone while carrying the pigskin 24 times for 217 yards with six more scores going up. On defense, Brown shinned even brighter, if possible, at linebacker tallying 95 tackles, 18 tackles for a loss, 5.5 sacks, 10 quarterback hurries, one fumble recovery, and one interception in 10 games played.

That kind of dominance has not been lost on college coaching staffs. So far, Brown has been extended 23 scholarship offers coming from Washington State, Iowa State, Arizona, UTEP, Oregon, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, San Diego State, San Jose State, Boston College, Syracuse, Florida International, Toledo, UNLV, Nebraska, BYU, Washington, and Utah. With his recruiting process still wide-open, Brown could hit 30 offers in a hurry once the first three games of his season go out for public consumption.

In a RNG preseason catch-up interview, I sat down with one of California’s top all-around Class of 2019 recruits getting the inside scoop on his offseason workouts, the Lion’s fall camp, and his recruiting process.

Interview

Travion, how did your offseason workouts go?

“They went well. As a team, we worked out hard. We had a scrimmage yesterday, we got to put that to the test on other kids. It went pretty well.”

When did the Lions start fall camp?

“We started last month. We finished last week. We are going into the fall season part of our practices now. We play Saddleback on Friday.”

Which parts of your game have you been working on going up against your teammates in camp?

“On defense, keeping my pad level low, being quicker, having a quicker reaction time, and getting off blocks. On offense, staying linear, keeping my chest up, and dominating my opponent.”

You are playing on offense again this year, where all will we see you line up?

“You will see me at slot, any of the receiver spots, and some at Wildcat.”

Wildcat, that will be fun to see. Where all are you lining up on defense?

“You will see me at linebacker and, in some packages, I will be on the line at weak-side defensive end.”

Did you showcase your skills this summer at any college camps?

“Yes. I went to the Redlands camps. I did well there. I went to four Redlands camps that I can remember.”

How many offers do you have now?

“I have 23 offers.”

Which schools were the last couple of schools to offer you?

“Washington, Central Florida, New Mexico State, and Fresno State were the last few.”

Which schools are showing interest but have not offered yet?

“Princeton – they just contacted me.”

At which position are most of the schools recruiting you to play?

“On defense, outside linebacker.”

Of the 23 programs that have offered, are there any that are showing a little more interest above and beyond the others?

“Washington State contacts me every day. Oregon State and UCF (Central Florida) are in regular contact with me, but Washington State has contacted me the most.”

Do you have any visits set for this fall?

“I am setting up a couple. On Sept. 29, I am heading to Washington State for their homecoming vs. Utah. I am planning on visiting Fresno State, Oregon State, and UCF is trying to set one up for November.”

Because you have so many offers from so many great schools and programs, have you started thinking about a commitment date yet?

“I want to commit by December. I want to know where I am going so I do not have to stress about it.”

Back to football. The Lions, as you mentioned, open the season against Saddleback on Friday. What kind of game are you expecting from the Roadrunners?

“Their offense is predicated on running. Up front on defense, we have to be dominating and enforce our will. We have to come out of the gate fast. We have to show these dudes what we came to do and play hard.”

What other games are you hyped to play this season?

“I am excited to play Ontario Christian and Aquinas, we have a rivalry with those two schools. Homecoming is our biggest game. That should be fun.”

What goals have you set for yourself during your senior season?

“For my senior year, I want to lead vocally and by my actions. Right now, I am accomplishing my goal. I led the team out for our scrimmage, we had great energy coming out. I want to show the team how we play Linfield ball. My goal is to dominate and be even more aggressive this year. I want to show everyone that I am not one to mess with.”

Travion, I believe you will make it happen. Thanks for your time today and good luck with the upcoming season.

“Thank you.”
