Interview: Scooter Harrington verbally commits to BC 2016 class

Top Connecticut TE talks about joining Eagles

A day after joining rock star status among the Boston College faithful as verbal commitment to the Eagles 2016 recruiting class, Scooter Harrington was back to being a normal high school teenager shoveling snow off the family’s driveway the following morning.

In between a successful visit to the Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts campus and shoveling snow off the grounds of his family’s Greenwich area home, the big 6’5”, 235 pound, tight end sat down to answer a couple of questions about his verbal commitment to the Eagles.

Scooter, what influenced you to commit to Boston College on Saturday?

“When I got on campus it felt right. I could see myself going there for college. Boston College has exactly what I was looking for in both academics and sports. The locker room environment was great. All the players were answering my questions about the team and talking openly to me about everything.”

How did the commitment take place?

“I already told my parents I was going to commit. We went into a meeting with Coach (Frank) Leonard and Coach (Steve) Addazio. When we got in there I told them I wanted to be an Eagle and come to BC. They jumped up and gave me a hug. I was really happy to share that moment with my parents and future coaches.”

How did the rest of the day go with the coaches?

“Later on in the day I sat in on a positional meeting then I had a one-on-one sit down with Coach Leonard. He showed me some game film of what all I’ll be doing when I get to campus.

How did you feel at that moment when you verbally committed?

“It was great – I felt great. It’s what I’ve wanted to do since I was little. Even if I didn’t have a choice to go there on scholarship I’d still want to go there. I’m very happy with my commitment.”

Is there a sense of relief, that to some extent, your recruiting process is over?

“Yeah, definitely. I’m relieved to know where I’m going for college. I know that I’m going to the right place for me. I’m excited for the future.”

Do you still plan to take your visits during your senior season?

“I’ll only take one, to BC.”

Do you plan on recruiting other players to join you?

“Yeah, I’ve been developing relationships with other Connecticut kids. Telling them they should join me. I met another BC guy on Saturday, Sean Ragan (OG St. John’s High School, Shrewsbury, MA). Sean and I talked at the beginning of the day and then after the both of us had committed. I exchanged messages with him. We’re both looking forward to the future.

Do you have any players you would like to target already?

“Kobe Quansah (LB Kingswood Oxford, CT) and Jacob Morgens (LB St. Luke High School, New Canaan, CT) are two I have already started talking to. I know both of them well from other events.”

How are you going to pitch the other players to join you?

“I think it’s a pretty easy sell. BC has top of the line academics and offers a chance to compete for an ACC championship. BC is also close to all of our houses. I don’t know about for anyone else but it works for me.”

How have the BC faithful reacted to your commitment?

“I’ve gotten a couple of new follows on Twitter and a lot of congratulations messages.”

How do you feel now that everything is starting to calm down? You sound tired.

“It’s been a long 24 hours, I was shoveling the snow out of the driveway this morning and we got back late last night.”

The Greenwich High School star picked BC over offers from Connecticut, N.C. State, Rutgers, Virginia, and Yale with heavy recruiting interest from Duke, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, and Stanford.

Harrington had a standout junior season playing tight end and defensive end. He was named All-State, All-County, USA Today All-State team, Connecticut Class LL coaches All-State Team at tight end.
