Year after year Louisiana churns out some of the best high school football players in the nation. To do well in the Sportsman’s Paradise is an accomplishment not taken lightly by college coaches. After TreVonte’ Citizen helped Lake Charles Prep to an 11-2 record in 2018, college coaches started to take notice. The 5-11, 200-pound, emerging every down back was a key contributor as a freshman tallying 201 yards off 24 totes with two scores and pulled in passes for 11 yards. His athleticism is also on full display this season for college coaches on defense seeing him line up at linebacker. The two-way talent took his skills to college camps over the summer earning offers from Mississippi State and Penn State.
In an RNG exclusive interview, I sat down with the rising four-star recruit for insight on the growth of his game with a quick recruiting update.
Interview
TreVonte’, before we get into all that you do well as a running back, I want to highlight your blocking for a minute. That aspect of the game tends to get overlooked for running backs. I know you have at least one knockdown block on an end this season. Tell me about that part of your game.
“I believe that is the most fun for a running back. You can be a great runner, but you also have to protect the quarterback.”
You have breakaway speed but you are also a hard runner, what are some of the other attributes to your game that make you an explosive back?
“I have good field vision and it is hard to tackle me.”
Which areas of your game did you focus on over the offseason?
“I worked on my hands. You have to be able to go out for a pass. I also worked on my footwork.”
How is all that hard work showing up in the form of improvements on the field this season?
“I am seeing improvement in finding the hole.”
The offense you guys run is unique. What sets are you guys running and how are the coaches getting you the ball this season?
“Our sets are mostly out of the Spread. We have some amazing receivers, that opens up the box more for running plays. We run a lot of inside zone and powers.”
You are also playing linebacker this season. How is that part of your game coming along?
“It is coming along great. It is helping me as a running back. As a linebacker, I see that hole and how it opens up and develops. Playing both ways helps both sides of my game.”
Going into recruiting, which schools have offered you so far?
“Mississippi State and Penn State.”
Did you get to visit any campuses this summer?
“Yes. I went to LSU and to Houston for camps.”
How did the LSU camp go for you?
“It went great. That camp put me out there.”
In which ways did you showcase your talents to put yourself out there?
“I did everything well – my routes, one-on-ones, I was getting open, and I caught the ball well.”
If you will, tell me about the Houston camp?
“It went great too. Same results as the LSU camp. It was a good camp all around for me.”
Are you taking any trips this fall?
“I am planning on visiting Mississippi State in November for the Alabama game.”
That will be fun. Last two questions, but back to football. What are some other big games left on the schedule you are pumped to play?
“The Kinder game.”
Which goals do you want to accomplish this season?
“My goal is for my team to win and for us to go to the Dome.”
TreVonte’, it was great learning more about you and your game today. Thanks for your time and good luck until we speak again.
“Thank you.”
