Jim Croce told us to not tug on Superman’s cape or to pull on the Lone Ranger’s mask, now California quarterbacks are learning not to throw Elisha Lloyd’s way. The 5-10.5, 175-pound, corner got onto the scene a year ago with San Diego’s Cathedral Catholic using his video taped 4.37 speed to shutdown Division I foes. The junior is suiting up for Mission Hills this season showcasing the same results. Lloyd is also an impact player on special teams as a kick returner with elite speed that cannot be caught once freed.

In an RNG catch-up interview, I sat down with one of California’s elite under the radar talents in the 2021 class going over his 2019 season on the field with an update on his growing recruiting process.

Interview

Elisha, the Grizzlies have been in some slugfest games this season getting a big 20-14 win on the road over Ramona on Sept. 20. In your view, how is the team looking coming off the bye week?

“We are looking a lot better. During that Ramona week we had two starters out, but both are back for this week. We should be 100 percent healthy for Oceanside. We are looking good.”

Given your dynamic speed, where all are you lining up on the field for the Grizzlies this season?

“I’m playing kick returner, corner, and sometimes I am playing receiver.”

I’ve always liked your play on defense as a cover corner who will hit stopping the run. How has the season started out for you on defense?

“On defense, it has been great. I have two tackles for a loss, 10 total tackles, 3 picks – one pick-six, and seven pass breakups. It is all lining up for me on defense.”

What do you feel are the strengths to your overall game on defense?

“I feel more comfortable on the field now. I am trusting my technique and speed. The offseason work is paying off right now.”

How does the rotation into the offense work for you?

“They only have me in on certain packages.”

What goals have you set for the season or for the last half of the regular season?

“As a team, the goal is to win CIF. I think we have the talent to make a run. My personal goals, I want at least six picks, two forced fumbles, and a kick return for a touchdown in the second half of the season.”

Which schools are showing interest but have not offered yet?

“The main schools are Oregon State, I have been in contact with their defensive backs coach, Utah, Nebraska, and Washington.”

Have you visited any schools from the offseason to now?

“I went to UCLA in March.”

How did that go?

“It was really good. I talked to their defensive backs coach and they took me around the campus.”

Last question for you. You guys get a good Oceanside (4-1) team at home on Friday. What kind of game are you expecting from the Pirates?

“I am thinking they will run a lot; they have an all-star running back. With our scheme, we should shut it down. It should be a great game.”

Elisha, always great catching up with you. I appreciate your time and wish you and the team success the rest of the way.

“Thank you.”
