There are a million different reasons football has acquired a devoted fan base over the last 100-plus years in America, and players like Jamarion Miller are one of the big play-makers why. The 5-10, 185-pound, speed demon is pure excitement on the gridiron with home run capabilities every time he touches the ball, and from any yard marker. His talents already have college scouts dreaming.
Miller took it to 6A Texas defenses last season rushing for 1031 yards off 140 totes with 10 trips into the end zone and secured 12 passes for another 111 yards. The coaches at Tyler Legacy were not done utilizing the athletic talents at Miller’s disposal. The super sophomore was a wide receiver stopper in the Raiders’ secondary at corner coming in against the tough match-ups producing 12 tackles, 10 solo, with seven pass breakups in the four to five games needed. All that speed and field vision was put to good use on special teams taking seven kicks back for 213 yards. When the 2020 season kicks off for the Raiders, college coaches will get to see more of Miller on defense at corner and possibly at free safety.
With eight offers on the table and another big season planned, Miller stepped inside the RNG Lab for the first time going over his 2020 goals with insight on what makes his abilities so dynamic on the field.
Interview
Jamarion, you have one of the more fluid and effortless running motions out there. It is impressive watching you glide past a defender that has the angle on you and then realize you’ve kicked in the jets. Have you always had that elite jet gear?
Yes, sir. Since I was little, I have always been fast.
How fast are you? What is the best-timed run you’ve posted?
My 100-meter, last year, was an 11.06.
Your speed is impressive, but so is how you hit the hole. What is your mentality as a running back when your number is called on a hand-off?
Only thing I am trying to do is get to the end zone so we can win the game.
Easy enough. What are some of the other traits to your game as a running back that make you so dangerous?
My power. It all depends on how it is looking through the hole. I can use my speed to get past the defenders and my power to get through them. In the passing game, I can get open and use my speed to beat the defenders. All I need is one move on them and it is a touchdown.
You got some snaps on defense in 2019 as well. What position(s) were you playing and what were your roles within the scheme?
I played corner, but only if there was a good receiver on their team with a lot of speed; ‘cause I have a lot of speed.
Yes, you do. How many games did you play at corner last season?
Probably four or five.
Calling Mr. Miller out of the bullpen; I like it. What have you worked on with the technical part of your game as an offensive threat this offseason?
Being shifty, moves to shake the defender. I have been working on my catching more, just in case they want to move me to that spot. There are multiple positions I can play and be good at.
How have you added more strength to your athletic abilities?
A lot of running, squats, and bench press.
The speed is always there, but how have you pushed to improve the speed and agility you already have?
I keep running. When I am tired, I keep pushing myself. I am doing cone drills working on my starting and stopping, my cuts, and speed out of my cuts.
Which positions are you playing this season?
They are talking about me playing at running back and receiver. I know I will play corner, and they are thinking about playing me at free safety.
Going into recruiting. How many offers do you have?
Eight.
Which program was the last to offer?
I just got one from Washington State.
Miller’s Offer Sheet: Arkansas, Baylor, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, SMU, Texas Tech, UTSA, and Washington State
Nice. When the opportunity comes up to take visits again, are there any programs on that list?
All the schools that have offered. I want to meet their coaching staff and see how everything is there.
Turning to the upcoming season. When did the Raiders begin fall camp?
We’ve been going for a few months now.
In your opinion, how is the team looking?
The team is looking good. We should make it far – deep into the playoffs this year.
When does the season officially begin for you guys?
Our first day of full pads practice is next week. Our first game is on the 25th and we have a scrimmage on the 17th.
Given all that you will be doing this season, what goals have you set for yourself?
I want to get more yards than last year and more touchdowns, and I want the team to make it far into the playoffs.
Jamarion, it was great spending time with you today. Wishing you guys a successful season until we talk again.
Thank you.
