Sean Berry is that versatile defensive back high school football coaches love having on the roster. Capable of making an impact at safety or corner, Berry can be lined up at key spots on the field to neutralize the opposition’s playmaker; the evidence was a stat line filled with one big play after another.
Seeing the 6-1, 170-pound, rising talent streak across the field for a stop is nothing new for fans of Wilson High School football. Berry showcased his 4.45 speed in the 40-yard dash coming up with 64 tackles, 42 solo, six tackles for a loss, one sack, one QB hurry, four forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery. His speed and athleticism was also used on offense out of the backfield covering 155 yards off 24 totes in 11 games played. The end of season results included an 8-3 campaign for the Wildcats against Texas 5A competition and first team All-District 5A honors for Berry.
College coaches are starting to take notice of Berry interest is coming in from Kansas State, Texas State, Tulsa, and Minnesota with a big summer college camp circuit that includes LSU, TCU, and SMU among others.
During the Nike Opening Regional in Dallas, I got some time to speak with Berry covering his junior season, offseason workouts, and summer camp plans.
Interview
Sean, you were all over the field last year in the secondary, how would you best describe your play as a defensive back?
“I’m a physical corner. I’m good in the zone and with my one-on-ones. I also come up to make tackles against the run.”
Of all the positions in the secondary you play, which do you like playing the most?
“Corner.”
Which game was your best in 2017?
“Last season, I mostly played safety. My best game was our first playoff game against Kimble. I had three pass deflections, a sack, and two forced fumbles.”
How did your overall game improve during your junior season?
“I got a lot better overall as a defensive back. I was more physical, I made more tackles, my cover skills got better – I worked with my DB coach every day to get my footwork down.”
Are we going to see you at multiple positions during your senior year?
“I doubt. I may play some receiver, but mainly I will be in the secondary.”
What are you working on this offseason to prepare for the 2018 schedule?
“I am working on getting bigger, and working on my strength and weakness.”
What other camps have you attended this spring other than the Nike Opening Regional?
“I went to the Top 100 Next Level Camp.”
What is the best 40-yard dash time you’ve posted?
“My best is a 4.45.”
Do you have any other upcoming camps scheduled?
“The last day of school, I’m going to a Prairie View camp. I am also planning on attending camps at LSU, TCU, SMU, and a lot of local schools.”
Which schools are showing interest in you?
“Texas State, Kansas State, Tulsa, and Minnesota are showing the most interest.”
Have you taken any unofficial visits?
“I have visited North Texas.”
How did that go for you?
“It was a good visit. I talked to a couple of the coaches and watched their DBs practice; they were good.”
I know you compete in track events for Wilson, which events?
“I run the 200, 4×1, and 4×2.”
What is your best time in the 200?
“21.9.”
When does Wilson start spring ball?
“We don’t have spring ball. We start this summer and go through the season.”
How is the team looking this year in the weight room and with 7v7 drills?
“We should be good. We have a big O-line. Our defense is stacked especially in the secondary.”
What can the fans expect from the Wildcats in 2018?
“They should expect a lot of us this year. It’ll be a good year for us.”
Sean, thank you for your time today and good luck with all the upcoming camps.
“Thank you.”
