The 2015 season showcased a wealth of juniors on the gridiron nationwide displaying great athleticism on both sides of the ball, and for some in all three phases of the game. California is loaded with athletes but college coaches looking for a dynamic do-it-all kind of player in the 2017 recruiting class may need to look no further than Jaylon Redd.
Just east of Los Angeles at Rancho Cucamonga High School is an abundance of speed, talent, and athleticism on roster expected to do big things in 2016 and Redd is drawing his fair share of the attention. If next level recruiters are looking for a corner that can cover and stop the run, Redd had 63 tackles, 33 solo, one tackle for a loss, and three interceptions last season. If a running back is desired, the 5’9”, 185 pound, all-purpose back rushed 99 times for 671 yards with nine touchdowns and pulled in 20 passes for 232 yards with three additional touchdowns.
Redd is fast on fast in the open field highlighted by his recent 10.8 in the 100 meters on the track. In the third phase of the game he displayed shiftiness and that breakaway speed netting 99 punt return yards and 376 kick return yards.
Where Redd will play his college ball is still up in the air. Teams like Washington, Utah, Cal, Colorado, Nebraska, Boise State, Arizona State, USC, Oregon, Oklahoma, Washington State, Michigan, and Oklahoma are all making a push for him to commit to their programs.
In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I got some time with Redd while he was taking in a practice from another one of his offers, UCLA. We covered his offseason schedule, got a recruiting update, and got his thoughts on what he was looking to see from the Bruins spring practice.
