When it comes to high school football and recruiting players for the next level, the Sunshine State has no shortage of talent being groomed to matriculate as impact players to the college ranks. Yet another in a long line of Florida players working to carry the torch is Class of 2021 Leon High School linebacker Josh Seabrook.
Seabrook (6-0, 205) took freshman snaps at the varsity level in 2017 parlaying that into 40 tackles, 21 solo, four tackles for a loss, two sacks, six quarterback hurries, and a forced fumble during his sophomore campaign going against 7A Florida competition. The Tallahassee product, with a 3.3 GPA, is starting to emerge on Power Five Program recruiting boards with Mississippi State, Kentucky, and Wake Forest already taking notice.
In an RNG exclusive interview, I sat down with Seabrook covering the 2018 season and offseason workout goals.
Interview
Josh, looking back on your sophomore season, what were some of the keys to the game you learned through experience that will help you going forward?
“I learned from my freshman year playing varsity that helped this season and that is overcoming adversity in the game.”
What was your role within the Lions defense last season?
“I had multiple roles playing outside and middle linebacker.”
How did your overall game improve as a linebacker in 2018?
“I was reading guards better, flowing to the ball better, blitzing better, filling the gaps better, and my tackling improved.”
Was there a weakness to your game to start the year but by the end of the season you had turned it into a strength?
“One of my weaknesses was timing the snap count. As the season went on, I got better at timing the snap count.”
Which game was your best last season and why do you consider that to be your best game?
“I’d say the Godby game was my best. In that game, I was all over the field making plays and filling the gap. I think I had 15 tackles that game. And, it was against a crosstown rival. That was a big game for me.”
This offseason, which areas of your game are you focused on improving?
“I want to improve on my speed. The weight room – I love the weight room and I love working in the weight room. I want to improve my strength in the weight room. I have good strength now but I want to keep working. From my position, I will work on my hands and hips. I am working on my coverage. My speed will help with covering and breaking on the ball.”
Are you playing any other varsity sports for Leon?
“Yes, sir. I compete in wrestling, weight lifting, and track.”
Which events in track?
“The shot and discus.”
In practice and during games, what kind of teammate are you?
“In practice, that is lock-in time. In practice, there is no joking around for me. I take each rep serious and I work on my craft. The game, that is when you perform what you’ve been working on. If it does not go your way, don’t get down. That will mess up your whole game. Being the athlete and teammate that I am, I encourage my teammates to not worry, keep working, and we will be good. Football is a mental game.”
Josh, I appreciate your time today and wish you luck with your workouts and other varsity sports.
“Thank you.”
