Salt Lake City’s East High School always seems to produce several next level talents each year off their football teams. During the 2017 season, the Leopards were once again stacked producing an 11-3 record ending the schedule ranked No. 2 in the state of Utah (MaxPreps). One of the next players in a long line of collegiate talents being groomed for a spot on a four-year roster is Nick Sessions. The 5-11, 181-pound, athlete played in the secondary for East’s varsity and junior varsity team while also getting some snaps in at receiver. One area of the game that popped for Sessions during his sophomore campaign was on defense coming up with seven interceptions, another was on special teams where he took back five kicks for scores. With a late season call-up to the varsity level, all Leopard fans are eager to see him translate his game for another deep run in the playoffs in 2018.
In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I sat down with Sessions after catching up with him at the Nike Opening Regional in Las Vegas for an in-depth conversation about his game and his early recruiting interest.
Interview
Nick, how did your sophomore season go?
“It went well. I had a pretty good season; seven picks, a couple of punt and kick returns for touchdowns. I Just want to keep progressing and improve my game this season.”
You did tear it up on special teams last year, how many returns did you take back for a touchdown?
“I took four punt returns back and one kick return for touchdowns.”
Impressive.
“Thank you.”
How did your overall game improve defense?
“I transitioned from corner to safety; I worked hard in offseason. I worked a lot on my footwork; my dad helped me with that. There is a lot to it, you can’t just go out there and rely on athleticism. I am always focused on footwork and speed.”
What about at receiver, how did your game improve at that position?
“I focused on route running, getting them together, (laughs) and improving my bricks for hands. Those two things are the main things for me.”
What do you consider the strengths of your game?
“On defense, my tackling. I love tackling. I like open-field tackling. It is fun to be one-on-one. Whoever wins, wins the play. I love playing on special teams – especially on kick returns. My agility is really good – moving side to side. I have good field vision. I can see the holes and where they will open. I am working more on my elusiveness this offseason.”
What else are you working on this offseason?
“Building my speed up.”
How have spring practices gone for you?
“Great. It is fun to be back on the field. Our practices have been good. We are focused on our plays early on, learning the playbook and coverages.”
Where all will we see you on the field in 2018 besides in the secondary and at receiver?
“I will play some at running back this year and maybe some at linebacker; I will be in the box at times this year.”
What is the best 40-yard dash time you’ve posted this offseason?
“My best 40 is a 4.6 hand-timed.”
Are you going to any college camps this summer?
“I may go to camps at Utah and Utah State, but I’m not sure yet. I may go to some more. We are still trying to figure all of that out.”
Which schools are showing recruiting interest in you?
“Washington, Michigan State, Oregon, Oregon State, Utah, BYU, Arizona, and Arizona State are all showing interest.”
Which schools have come by East to meet you in-person or watch you workout this spring?
“Oregon, Utah, Washington, Arizona, and Arizona State have come by East this spring.”
Have you taken any unofficial visits this offseason?
“Yes, sir. I have been to BYU, UNLV, Arizona State, and Utah.”
Do you compete in any other sports for East?
“I run track.”
Which events?
“The 100, 200, and 4×1.”
What is your best time in the 100?
“My best time in the 100 is 11.3.”
How are things going in the classroom this semester?
“This semester my GPA is a 3.5.”
What is your favorite subject in school?
“Math; I love math.”
Do you have an offseason goal you want to accomplish before 2018 season begins?
“I want to be at a 4.5 laser time by the start of the season. I also want to lift two plates seven to six times; I have lifted it four times so far on bench.”
Nick, I appreciate your time today. Good luck with the upcoming camps.
“Thank you.”
