Southwood High School, located in Shreveport, has been down year so far in 2016. Entering Week 5, they’re just 1-3 with their lone win coming on Sept. 9 against Fair Park (12-0). Despite playing in a tough district, the Cowboys have kept a positive attitude and are working hard to finish off the season strong.
One of the seniors that is leading the charge to keep playing and practicing hard is senior wide receiver Ellis Brossie.
The 5’10”, 155 pound, leader has great speed and does a great job at route running. However, his greatest strength on the field is his blocking ability for his teammates as the Cowboys run a Wing-T offense. Despite not receiving a lot of targets, Brossie does a great job of not being selfish and doing whatever he can to help his team win.
The Class of 2017 recruit already has one college offer and is currently drawing interest from several other schools including Cornell University from the Ivy League.
Not only is Brossie a great leader on the field but is one off the gridiron as well. He currently holds a 3.9 GPA and wants to study kinesiology or petroleum engineering in college.
In an exclusive Recruiting News Guru interview, I sat down with Ellis to discuss career at Southwood, how he plans to finish his senior year strong, and his recruiting process.
Interview
What are your thoughts on the 2016 season so far?
“This season we haven’t had a great year offensively, but we look to change that going into district play. We’ve started off kind of slow but we look to finish this 2016 season well.”
What are your thoughts on your individual performance so far this season?
“I’ll say my individual performance so far this season has been good. We run a Wing-T offense so I know we don’t pass the ball a lot, but I haven’t been selfish and I’ve been working hard blocking for my teammates.”
What are your strengths on the football field?
“My strengths are my speed and route running. It is very hard to guard me in man coverage. Also, I’ve been making a lot of key blocks for my running backs.”
Do you have any college offers?
“Avila University.”
What other schools are showing interest in you?
“Northwestern State University, Marist College, and Cornell University.”
Have gone to any camps?
“LSU, Tulane, Texas A&M, and Northwestern State camps.”
How does Southwood look going into district play?
“We look pretty good going into the rest of the season, even though the rest of our schedule is going to be harder. We face some great teams in Parkway, Evangel, Captain Shreve, and Haughton but we are not scared.”
What game left on the schedule are you most looking forward to playing?
“I am looking forward to facing Captain Shreve because it’s our homecoming.”
What are your goals for the rest of your senior season?
“My goal for the rest of my senior season is to get better as the season goes on and put up big numbers for my team.”
What is your GPA?
“Currently a 3.9.”
What is your fastest 40 yard dash time?
“4.5.”
What do you want to study in college?
“I want to either major in kinesiology or petroleum engineering.”
Is there a current NFL player that you try to model your game after?
“I model myself after many different players such as Will Fuller, Julio Jones, and Julian Edelman because they bring much different strengths to their game which makes them unique. But who I model myself after the most is Brandin Cooks, he reminds me of myself a lot.”
