Senior quarterback Jase Bauer is leading the charge of Ankeny’s offense which is averaging 48.8 points a game. The Hawks finished the regular season 7-1 and are getting ready to start postseason play. In the regular season, Bauer threw for 1,266 yards and 19 touchdowns against just two interceptions while rushing for an additional 428 yards and five more scores.
The 6’2”, 205-pound, field general has the tremendous arm strength to make all the Saturday throws and has great athleticism to escape pressure gaining yards with his legs. Bauer also has good footwork and high football IQ leading to the production in the pocket. The talents of the Class of 2021 recruit currently have brought five college offers forward and is also drawing interest from a number of schools including Iowa, Iowa State and Kansas State.
Bauer is not only a leader on the gridiron but also stars on the baseball and track teams and holds a 3.4 GPA in the classroom.
In an exclusive Recruiting News Guru interview, I caught up with Jase to talk about his senior season at Ankeny and get an update on his recruiting process.
Interview
Jase, how would you grade your individual performance on the field during your senior season?
I have definitely improved from last year. I’m doing things to try and help my team win football games.
What are your strengths on the football field?
I would definitely say my knowledge of the game. I know what the defense is going to do most of the time from my preparation of watching film and taking notes.
What is the most memorable moment in your high school career?
When we beat Southeast Polk on the road in the playoffs last year.
What is one area of your game that you have seen the most improvement in since the start of the regular season?
Staying in the pocket more. Last year I would like to escape when I felt a little pressure. I think I’m hanging in there better this year.
Are you more of a dual-threat or pro-style quarterback?
I would definitely say dual-threat. I feel I can bring something to the table that not all quarterbacks can with their legs. For a quarterback I’m pretty fast so when the pocket does collapse, I am able to get out and make plays.
What kind of offensive scheme does Ankeny run?
We run a Spread offense. We have weapons all over the offense. Defenses can’t stop us.
What is your fastest 40-yard dash time?
My fastest time 40-yard dash time is 4.59.
Is there a current NFL player that you try to model your game after?
Patrick Mahomes (Chiefs), because he’s so fun to watch.
Do you have any college offers?
Southern Illinois, South Dakota State, Northern Iowa, Eastern Illinois, Western Illinois and then I just received a preferred walk-on offer from Iowa.
What other schools are you receiving interest from at this time?
The schools showing interest right now include Wyoming, Iowa State, Kansas State, New Mexico State, Central Michigan, and Bowling Green.
Do you play any other sports in high school?
I play baseball and run track.
What do you like most about playing at Ankeny?
I feel like at Ankeny we are truly a family.
What is your mindset heading into the state playoffs?
I want people to know how hard I worked.
What do you want your legacy to be after you graduate?
I want people to know you have to work to achieve success.
What is your GPA?
I have a 3.4 GPA.
Do you have a favorite quote or Bible verse?
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” – Proverbs 3:5-6.
Thank you for your time and good luck in the playoffs.
Thank you, sir.
