The Cyclones took a big step forward with their 2018 recruiting class on Monday landing California dual-threat Re-al Mitchell. With Mitchell onboard, Iowa State now has a centerpiece to work around filling out their class with a bright future in the pocket for years to come in Ames.

Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell, along with recruiting coordinator Alex Golesh, have taken a no holds barred approach to recruiting since arriving on campus in November of 2015. The 2017 class had talents from 12 different states ink their national letters of intent showing they will go anywhere in the country to draw in talent that will help them compete in the Big 12. The result in the 2017 haul was a very-very strong class with three-star talents up and down the board that gives hope to a bright future for the Cyclones football team. The addition of Mitchell does nothing but add to the optimism.

Mitchell brings with him a winning pedigree having help guide St. John Bosco, one of the nation’s top powerhouse high school football teams, to a California state title in 2016. Mitchell threw for 2,932 yards hitting 198-of-294 pass attempts connecting on 30 touchdowns. His blazing speed was a weapon few opposing teams had an answer for carrying the rock 152 times for 1,058 yards with 15 trips to the end zone.

The recruiting win for the Cyclones landing Mitchell was a big one securing his talents over 24 other offers. ISU wrestled Mitchell away from South Carolina, Illinois, Northwestern, Arizona, Utah, Central Florida, San Jose State, Fresno State, Air Force, and UNLV among others. The other top contenders for Mitchell appeared to be Rutgers and UConn. The Huskies hosted Mitchell on an unofficial visit April 14 with the Scarlet Knights getting him for a day on April 15. In the end, a late March visit to Ames was too much for other programs to overcome.

Iowa State must stay vigilant in their recruitment of Mitchell even though he is a verbal commitment, squads like Nebraska, North Carolina, and Purdue are late to the party but have been showing interest in the Los Angeles area talent.

In a previous RNG interview with Mitchell, when asked how he will come to pick his top school, Mitchell replied, “I want a place that feels like home to me and where I have the best relationship with the coaches.”

The Cyclones now have five verbal commitments to their 2018 recruiting class.
